<strong>The</strong> DP’s preparation 23<br />

your full order <strong>of</strong> just one batch number for each type <strong>of</strong> film c<strong>an</strong> be put<br />

aside in their fridge <strong>an</strong>d delivered to your production <strong>of</strong>fice on a weekly<br />

basis.This helps keep the film stock in prime condition.<br />

<strong>The</strong> technical schedule<br />

Using almost <strong>an</strong>y diary program on your computer you c<strong>an</strong> generate a<br />

very accurate daily list <strong>of</strong> all your requirements for the whole <strong>of</strong> a film.<br />

Figure 2.4 shows the technical schedule for the whole <strong>of</strong> the Neville’s<br />

Isl<strong>an</strong>d shoot. Before going on a recce, enter ‘Camera: Normal Kit’ <strong>an</strong>d<br />

‘Lighting: Normal Kit’ on all the shooting days. <strong>The</strong>n, enter your days<br />

<strong>of</strong>f so that they show on the agenda; this gives you <strong>an</strong> entry for every<br />

day <strong>of</strong> the whole shooting period. Now, referring to the production’s<br />

draft schedule, enter the scene numbers you are going to shoot on all<br />

the given dates.<br />

Having prepared your agenda in this way as you go round the locations<br />

on the technical recce, all you have to enter are the ch<strong>an</strong>ges from<br />

the normal kit.<br />

Publish this technical schedule as widely as possible <strong>an</strong>d as soon<br />

after the last recce as is hum<strong>an</strong>ly possible. Apart from having saved<br />

the first assist<strong>an</strong>t director <strong>an</strong>d the line producer a lot <strong>of</strong> effort, you<br />

have now made it possible for the production <strong>of</strong>fice, should location<br />

dates ch<strong>an</strong>ge, to easily track your extra requirements just by looking at<br />

the old date, seeing which scene number the equipment relates to, <strong>an</strong>d<br />

posting the requirements to wherever the scenes move to in the new<br />

schedule as pl<strong>an</strong>ning progresses.<br />

By producing this kind <strong>of</strong> technical schedule you make it easy for<br />

the <strong>of</strong>fice to keep the production on track <strong>an</strong>d you have created a situation<br />

whereby you will be bothered far less on the set as things ch<strong>an</strong>ge.<br />

Hence you get more time to do what you really enjoy <strong>–</strong> shooting the<br />

movie!<br />

You might like to read Figure 2.4 bearing in mind the kind <strong>of</strong> story it<br />

might have been. Monday 20 October includes camera splash bag, second<br />

camera for fireworks <strong>an</strong>d CAMERA SAFETY BOAT together<br />

with, on Monday 3 November, CHERRY PICKER bucket to be<br />

draped to be ‘Helicopter’. It was a very interesting picture to shoot!
