word came out of the
speaker in a voice that

It said, “Greetings.”
Mei just sat there
stunned until Lao
nudged her. She looked
up at him blankly.
“Say something,” he
whispered, glancing at
the moldate.
She turned tentatively
toward the microphone
in front of her.
“Hello, my name is Mei.
I have studied your kind
for many years. This is
quite a privilege.”
Lao’s hand on her
shoulder kept her from
continuing. “Give the
system a moment to
catch up,” he suggested.
Mei watched the back
wall of the container
morph about carefully,
nearly as much as the
moldate had. A reply
was quick in coming.
