200S. Seminar in Latin American Studies. Interdisciplinary study <strong>of</strong> geographical,<br />

historical, economic, governmental, political, and cultural aspects <strong>of</strong> modern Latin America<br />

and <strong>the</strong> current issues facing <strong>the</strong> region. Specific topics will vary from year to year. For<br />

seniors and graduate students. Instructor: Staff. 3 units.<br />

202S. Research without Borders:Building Expertise in Japanese, European, Latin<br />

American, or Slavic Studies. Interdisciplinary resources for graduate-level research in one<br />

or more area studies, with a particular focus on European, Latin American, East Asian, and<br />

Slavic Studies. Team teaching approach drawing on <strong>the</strong> diverse regional and disciplinary<br />

expertise <strong>of</strong> four course instructors, who are both subject librarians and area studies<br />

specialists. Instructor: Ackerman, Madden, Troost, Zitser. 3 units. C-L: Asian and African<br />

Languages and Literature 207S, Russian 203S, Romance Studies 202S, German 264S<br />

298. Introduction to Latin American Cultural Studies. A problem-oriented course, but<br />

also covering <strong>the</strong>oretical issues, integrating approaches from two or more disciplines.<br />

Topics vary from year to year. Instructor: Staff. 3 units.<br />

350. Colloquium. Weekly presentations on various pr<strong>of</strong>essional and intellectual issues<br />

relating to Latin American Cultural Studies. Credit/no credit grading only. Prerequisite:<br />

enrollment in Latin American Cultural Studies certificate program. Instructor: Staff. 1 unit.<br />

Graduate Liberal Studies (LS)<br />

GLS <strong>of</strong>fers a Master <strong>of</strong> Arts in Liberal Studies (MALS) degree—a flexible,<br />

interdisciplinary degree that allows individuals to pursue a variety <strong>of</strong> personal and<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional educational interests across disciplinary boundaries. Students study on a partor<br />

full-time basis and choose from an array <strong>of</strong> interdisciplinary courses developed<br />

specifically for this program. GLS <strong>of</strong>fers up to seven courses in each <strong>of</strong> three academic<br />

semesters (fall, spring, and summer), including study-abroad opportunities. In addition to<br />

liberal studies courses, students may select courses from o<strong>the</strong>r departments <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Graduate<br />

School.<br />

The MALS degree consists <strong>of</strong> nine courses and a final project. The final project, which<br />

may take <strong>the</strong> form <strong>of</strong> academic research, applied research, or creative work, provides <strong>the</strong><br />

opportunity for <strong>the</strong> student to apply <strong>the</strong> knowledge and skills gained through seminars to an<br />

independent activity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> student’s design.<br />

Graduate faculty, from throughout <strong>the</strong> university, teach GLS seminars and supervise<br />

student work.<br />

The MALS degree is now available to medical students in <strong>the</strong>ir third year <strong>of</strong> study. For<br />
