Center for Advanced Computing and Communication<br />

The Center for Advanced Computing and Communication (CACC) is a joint effort <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Duke</strong> <strong>University</strong> and North Carolina State <strong>University</strong>. Its research goal is to create<br />

concepts, methods and tools for use in <strong>the</strong> analysis, design and implementation <strong>of</strong><br />

advanced computer and communication systems. The Center strives to carry out basic and<br />

applied research on fundamental problems with both industrial and academic relevance, to<br />

transfer <strong>the</strong>se results to members, and to provide students with a unique and challenging<br />

Center for <strong>the</strong> Study <strong>of</strong> Aging and Human Development<br />

The center is a multidisciplinary program devoted to research, training, and<br />

clinical activities in gerontology and geriatrics. Although <strong>the</strong> center does not <strong>of</strong>fer<br />

degrees, <strong>the</strong> varied programs, research laboratories, and clinical settings provide a<br />

context and resource for undergraduate and graduate students and for health<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essionals with special interests in adult development and aging. The center<br />

conducts multidisciplinary, two-year programs for postdoctoral fellows interested in<br />

focused training for independent research on many varied aspects <strong>of</strong> aging and<br />

adult development. Resources <strong>of</strong> this all-university program include data from two<br />

longitudinal studies, a wide range <strong>of</strong> archival data <strong>of</strong> special interest to social<br />

scientists, a human subjects registry, and <strong>the</strong> center’s basic and applied research<br />

laboratories. A division <strong>of</strong> geriatrics coordinates research, training, and services<br />

related to <strong>the</strong> care <strong>of</strong> older adults. Undergraduate and graduate students <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

university are welcome to inquire about participation in all programs at <strong>the</strong> center.<br />

Asian/Pacific Studies Institute (APSI)<br />

The Asian/Pacific Studies Institute (APSI) is <strong>the</strong> focal point <strong>of</strong> research and teaching<br />

on <strong>the</strong> Asian/Pacific region at <strong>Duke</strong> <strong>University</strong>. Started in 1981, today APSI has 30<br />

fulltime faculty members at <strong>Duke</strong> and 20 affiliated faculty members from regional<br />

universities. It is <strong>the</strong> largest center for research and teaching on East Asia in <strong>the</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>ast.<br />

The Institute <strong>of</strong>fers an interdisciplinary MA program in East Asian Studies, as well as a<br />

joint JD/MA program. There is also a certificate program for students pursuing o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

graduate degrees who wish to document <strong>the</strong>ir specialization in East Asia. APSI organizes<br />

conferences, a speaker series, research clusters, a visiting scholar program, and <strong>the</strong> <strong>Duke</strong><br />

<strong>Duke</strong> has a strong tradition in Canadian Studies dating back more than three decades.<br />
