239S. American Mass Political Behavior. Several facets <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> political behavior <strong>of</strong> mass<br />

actors in American politics. Likely topics include <strong>the</strong> factors that cause <strong>the</strong> type and amount<br />

<strong>of</strong> individual participation, mobilization by elites, ideology and information, partisanship,<br />

partisan stability and change, socialization, macro-level change, negative advertising,<br />

economic voting, issue evolution, and <strong>the</strong> effects <strong>of</strong> institutional changes (especially<br />

election rules) on voter turnout. Consent <strong>of</strong> Instructor required. Instructor: Aldrich. 3 units.<br />

240. The Politics <strong>of</strong> European Integration (D). Politics and institutions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> European<br />

Union (EU) and <strong>the</strong> historical process that led to it. Theoretical perspectives discussed<br />

include classics <strong>of</strong> integration <strong>the</strong>ory (ne<strong>of</strong>unctionalism, intergovernmentalism) but also<br />

<strong>the</strong>ories <strong>of</strong> state formation, delegation, and distributional politics (EU comparatively as<br />

instance <strong>of</strong> common political phenomena). Social constructivist, gender, and Marxist<br />

<strong>the</strong>ories also considered. Research papers on process <strong>of</strong> European integration or<br />

243S. Political Applications <strong>of</strong> Game Theory (C-E). Emphasis on acquiring good working<br />

knowledge <strong>of</strong> standard game <strong>the</strong>ory techniques and models used in political science<br />

literature, hence emphasis on examples and problem sets. No knowledge <strong>of</strong> game <strong>the</strong>ory<br />

presupposed, but good basic knowledge <strong>of</strong> calculus and elementary probability <strong>the</strong>ory.<br />

Includes examples from voting, congressional committees, ethnicity, IPE and IR, and CPE.<br />

252S. The Nation-State and <strong>the</strong> International System (D). The interaction between state<br />

structures and <strong>the</strong> international system, with a focus on <strong>the</strong> rise and development <strong>of</strong><br />

European nations. Topics include war and its effects on national political institutions,<br />

nationalism, and state formation; war and national revolution; imperialism and decolonization;<br />

and economic dependency and national autonomy. Research paper required.<br />

255S. State and Society in China (B). An examination <strong>of</strong> selected aspects <strong>of</strong> Chinese<br />

politics. Prerequisite: Political Science 117 or equivalent. Instructor: Shi. 3 units.<br />

256S. Theory and Practice <strong>of</strong> National Security (D). In-depth look at <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>oretical and<br />

empirical literature explaining how states seek to guarantee <strong>the</strong>ir national security. Topics<br />

include: grand strategy, nuclear deterrence and warfighting, coercive diplomacy, military<br />

intervention, decisions for war, and civil-military relations. Special attention paid to U.S.<br />

national security during and after <strong>the</strong> Cold War. Consent <strong>of</strong> instructor required. Instructor:<br />
