220S. Problems in International Politics (D). The development and critical analysis <strong>of</strong><br />

various models in political science and economics that focus on <strong>the</strong> relationship between<br />

international economics and international security. Various models <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> impact <strong>of</strong><br />

political-military dynamics on international economic relationships, and <strong>the</strong> impact <strong>of</strong><br />

international economics on <strong>the</strong> likelihood <strong>of</strong> war and peace among nations. Attention to <strong>the</strong><br />

interplay between economics and security in a key region <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> world--East Asia.<br />

Prerequisite: one course in international relations, foreign policy, or diplomatic history.<br />

221S. Theories <strong>of</strong> International Relations (D). Systematic evaluation <strong>of</strong> major <strong>the</strong>ories <strong>of</strong><br />

international relations, including realism, liberalism, and constructivism. Identification <strong>of</strong><br />

century. The rise <strong>of</strong> liberalism, <strong>the</strong> Age <strong>of</strong> Enlightenment, <strong>the</strong> romantic and conservative<br />

226S. Nietzsche's Political Philosophy (C-N). Study <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> thinker who has, in different<br />

incarnations, been characterized as <strong>the</strong> prophet <strong>of</strong> nihilism, <strong>the</strong> destroyer <strong>of</strong> values, <strong>the</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>r<br />

<strong>of</strong> fascism, and <strong>the</strong> spiritual source <strong>of</strong> postmodernism. An examination <strong>of</strong> his philosophy as<br />

a whole in order to come to terms with its significance for his thinking about politics.<br />

229S. Contemporary Theory <strong>of</strong> Liberal Democracy (C-N). Reading and discussion <strong>of</strong><br />

some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most important <strong>the</strong>oretical conceptions <strong>of</strong> democratic ideals and purposes since<br />

1970. Topics include social justice, individual rights and community, deliberative<br />

democracy, and <strong>the</strong> normative implications <strong>of</strong> moral and religious pluralism. Instructor:<br />

230S. Introduction to Positive Political Theory (C-E). Introduction to formal models in<br />

political science and a field <strong>of</strong> research that is at various times called political economy,<br />

positive political <strong>the</strong>ory, formal <strong>the</strong>ory, and public choice. Focus on three basic models that<br />

form <strong>the</strong> foundation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> field: individual choice, game <strong>the</strong>ory, and social choice.<br />

233. Intermediate Statistical Methods (C-E). Applications <strong>of</strong> regression models <strong>of</strong><br />

politics emphasizing <strong>the</strong> effect <strong>of</strong> assumptions behind Generalized Least Squares<br />
