Center for Documentary Studies<br />
The Center for Documentary Studies, established in 1989, supports interdisciplinary<br />
teaching and research along with <strong>the</strong> practice and dissemination <strong>of</strong> documentary work.<br />
The center teaches, engages in, and presents documentary work grounded in collaborative<br />
partnerships and extended fieldwork that uses photography, film/video, audio, and<br />
narrative writing to capture and convey contemporary memory, life, and culture. The<br />
Center’s graduate-level research focuses on a collaborative project titled “Behind <strong>the</strong> Veil:<br />
Documenting African American Life in <strong>the</strong> Jim Crow South,” directed by <strong>Duke</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essors<br />
William Chafe, Raymond Gavins, and Robert Korstad, but o<strong>the</strong>r research opportunities<br />
also exist. Graduate students may participate in a variety <strong>of</strong> courses that <strong>the</strong> center <strong>of</strong>fers<br />
under <strong>the</strong> auspices <strong>of</strong> several <strong>Duke</strong> departments and programs, including art, history,<br />
public policy studies, English, education, and cultural anthropology. Center-sponsored<br />
projects <strong>of</strong>fer a limited number <strong>of</strong> assistantships to graduate students in <strong>the</strong> arts and<br />

Center for European Studies<br />
The <strong>Duke</strong> Center for European Studies was established in 1989. In 1994 <strong>the</strong> U.S.<br />
Department <strong>of</strong> Education awarded <strong>the</strong> consortium with a Title VI grant and designated it<br />
as a National Resource Center. This grant was renewed for ano<strong>the</strong>r three years in 1997. In<br />
<strong>the</strong> summer <strong>of</strong> 1998, <strong>the</strong> European Union awarded <strong>the</strong> Center a three-year grant, and it<br />
became one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ten <strong>of</strong>ficial European Union Centers in <strong>the</strong> United States. The <strong>Duke</strong><br />
Center for European Studies brings toge<strong>the</strong>r a depth and quality <strong>of</strong> faculty drawn from<br />
highly regarded departments in <strong>the</strong> humanities, social sciences, law, business and public<br />
policy.<br />
The Center promotes interdisciplinary programs, courses and research that directly<br />
address questions concerning Europe and <strong>the</strong> European Union. The Center's goal is to<br />
ensure that faculty, students and <strong>the</strong> larger community have access to <strong>the</strong> finest<br />
scholarship and <strong>the</strong> most current resources on Europe. The Center <strong>of</strong>fers a Graduate<br />
Certificate in Interdisciplinary European Studies to those students meeting <strong>the</strong><br />
requirements listed on <strong>the</strong> Center Web site (see below). The Center hosts conferences,<br />
workshops, and visiting scholars, supports a graduate student colloquium and faculty/<br />
student working groups on focused research lines. The Center also supports <strong>Duke</strong> faculty<br />
and graduate students with academic year research grants and travel awards, and graduate<br />
students with <strong>the</strong> Provost’s Pre-Dissertation Summer International Research Fellowships.<br />

The John Hope Franklin Center for Interdisciplinary and International Studies is a<br />
unique consortium <strong>of</strong> programs committed to revitalizing notions <strong>of</strong> how knowledge is<br />
gained and exchanged. Participants from a broad range <strong>of</strong> disciplines converge to explore<br />
