367. The City, Modernity, Gender, and Literature: Nineteenth-Century Madrid. The<br />
course will examine <strong>the</strong> intersections among four terms: <strong>the</strong> city, modernity, gender, and<br />
literature. We will focus on 19th-century Madrid. We will explore <strong>the</strong> following topics: <strong>the</strong><br />
concept <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> public sphere and its contradictions; <strong>the</strong> gendering <strong>of</strong> public and private<br />
spheres and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> experience <strong>of</strong> modernity; <strong>the</strong> problem <strong>of</strong> representation in , and <strong>of</strong>, <strong>the</strong><br />
city; mass culture and <strong>the</strong> city; <strong>the</strong> realist novel and women in <strong>the</strong> streets. Instructor: Staff.<br />

370. Spanish Texts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Post-Dictatorship: La Movida en La Transicion, 1973-1993.<br />
An analysis <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> political and cultural processes at play during <strong>the</strong> Spanish transitional<br />
period when, with <strong>the</strong> 1973 assassination <strong>of</strong> Almirante Carrero Blanco and <strong>the</strong> subsequent<br />
death <strong>of</strong> general Franco in 1975, <strong>the</strong> country transformed <strong>the</strong> autocratic and military state<br />
imposed by Franco's dictatorship into <strong>the</strong> current democratic state. Focus on literary and<br />
cinematic texts and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> period, drag culture, pop music, and comics. Instructor: Staff. 3<br />

371. Cultural History and Theory. Seminar covering various topics in Latin American<br />
cultural history and <strong>the</strong>oretical production such as: (a) colonial legacies and postcolonial<br />
<strong>the</strong>ories; (b) <strong>the</strong> construction <strong>of</strong> identities and <strong>the</strong> critique <strong>of</strong> cultural colonialism; (c)<br />
contemporary critical production in Latin America, from dependency <strong>the</strong>ory to transnationalism<br />
and postmodernity. May be repeated for credit. Instructor: Mignolo or staff. 3 units.<br />
372. Latin American Vanguards. A seminar on <strong>the</strong> major avant-garde movements<br />
between 1915 and 1940, based in an interdisciplinary study <strong>of</strong> literature and visual culture.<br />
Examines contemporary criticism as well as <strong>the</strong>oretical texts from <strong>the</strong> period. Topics<br />
include: critical nationalism, indigenism vs. primitivism, formalism and political art, <strong>the</strong><br />
"gender <strong>of</strong> modernity." Instructor: Gabara. 3 units.<br />
375. Hispanic Literature, Mass Culture, and Theory. A study <strong>of</strong> Hispanic texts<br />
<strong>the</strong>matizing <strong>the</strong> effects <strong>of</strong> mass cultural fictions (serial novels, radio songs, movies) on those<br />
who consume <strong>the</strong>m. Fictional works will be juxtaposed with <strong>the</strong>ories on <strong>the</strong> effects <strong>of</strong> mass<br />
culture and its relationship to canonical literature. Authors <strong>of</strong> fictional texts include<br />
Cervantes, Galdós, Marti, Borges, Marsé, Puig, and Martín-Gaite. Instructor: Sieburth. 3<br />

Since its establishment in 1991, <strong>the</strong> Center for Slavic, Eurasian, and East European<br />
Studies has brought toge<strong>the</strong>r faculty and students from different departments and schools<br />
within <strong>Duke</strong> <strong>University</strong> who share a common interest in this region. The Center sponsors a<br />
