Fitness FItNess MusCle OF the MONth - the huMaN heart The heart is one of the most important organs in the entire human body. It is really nothing more than a pump, composed of muscle which pumps blood throughout the body, beating approximately 72 times per minute of our lives. The heart pumps the blood, which carries all the vital materials which help our bodies function and removes the waste products that we do not need. For example, the brain requires oxygen and glucose, which, if not received continuously, will cause it to lose consciousness. Muscles need oxygen, glucose and amino acids, as well as the proper ratio of sodium, calcium and potassium salts in order to contract normally. The glands need sufficient supplies of raw materials from which to manufacture the specific secretions. If the heart ever ceases to pump blood the body begins to shut down and after a very short period of time will die. The heart is essentially a muscle (a little larger than the fist). Like any other muscle in the human body, it contracts and expands. Unlike skeletal muscles, however, the heart works on the “All -or-Nothing Law”. That is, each time the heart contracts it does so with all its force. In skeletal muscles, the principle of “gradation” is present. The pumping of the heart is called the Cardiac Cycle, which occurs about 72 times per minute. This means that each cycle lasts about eight-tenths of a second. During this cycle the entire heart actually rests for about four-tenths of a second. CarDIOVasCular aCtIVIty Cardiovascular fitness is a measure of the combined efficiency of the lungs, heart, and bloodstream to bring oxygen to the working muscles. With a larger aerobic capacity, daily activities are completed more efficiently and it allows you to do the fun activities that you enjoy. How to find your heart rate: Radial Pulse 1. Follow the line of the thumb down to the shallow depression about an inch below your wrist. 2. Using the pads of the first 2 fingers press down to find your pulse. 3. Count the number of beats over 15 seconds, starting with zero. 4. Multiply by 4, to get the number of beats per minute. 18 calgarywinterclub.com | February 2009 Carotid Pulse 1. Multiply by 4, to get the number of beats per minute Your resting heart rate is beats per minute You can also use Borg’s Perceived Exertion Scale. This scale is used to describe the way you feel during exercise. At complete rest you are at 0 on the scale and if you are working at your max you are at 10 on the scale. To achieve cardiovascular benefits, you need to maintain intensity between 65% and 85% of your maximum heart rate or between 6.5 and 8.5 on the Perceived Exertion Scale for a minimum of 20 minutes a day, 2-5 times per week. Sign up sheets for Senior Men’s and Women’s events have been posted. Teams from the Men’s leagues qualify based on grand aggregate results during the season. Mixed teams will begin their Club Championships as part of their regular Friday night play. The Open and Junior leagues will also be holding their own playdowns. On a trial basis to avoid conflicts with Playdowns and attract more entries, the Senior Ladies Club Championship draw will allow teams a specified period of time to schedule and play each game similar to match play draws in golf. Each game will be assigned a “date to be played by”. Sign up in “Game Time”. jaM CaN MINI rOCk ‘sPIel: February 7 The CWC will once again host the annual CYCA Jam Can Lite Rock Bonspiel for 7 - 11 year olds. Register your teams with Dave in the Curling Office. A maximum of 40 teams will be accepted so get your entries in soon! This is an open event so any combination of genders is acceptable. It’s open to all CWC lady curlers.
