President’s Message
Happy 2009! I hope everyone had a great Christmas holiday
and is well on the way to accomplishing their new years
resolutions. We have a lot on the go this year at the Club and
as such, I have a great deal to share with everyone in this
edition of the Club News.
First, let me provide an update on the expansion proposal.
Given the size of the proposed expansion, prior to taking the
final detail to members, the Board wants to ensure that the
City will not request any significant changes. To this end, we
have had a predevelopment permit meeting with the City of
Calgary. We are currently reviewing the City’s initial
comments and work is underway for the development permit
application. Our goal is to submit an application to the City
in February 2009.
Further on the expansion proposal, the Board has voted
unanimously to postpone the member vote from this spring to
late fall. We find ourselves in the fortunate position of
possible flat to declining construction costs in 2009. We
believe the Club will be much better positioned to take
advantage of changes in the construction market in the fall
to early winter 2009 time frame. This is quite a change from
early 2008 when we had to consider escalation on
construction of close to 18% per year. Prior to going to
members in the fall we will update the proposed cost of
the project and adapt the plans to accommodate requested
changes from the City. We will begin to roll out
communication on the proposal shortly after everyone returns
from the summer for fall programs.
In addition to working on the expansion proposal, the Board
is starting two more initiatives that I would like to make you
aware of. First, we are in the process of developing an
ongoing measure of member satisfaction at the Club. This
measure will be established in a way that it can be repeated

over time giving us an indication of how your satisfaction
with the Club, and its services, is changing. We will be able to
focus on specific areas and services. This may require a small
amount of time on the part of members in the future. The
return on that time is providing a glimpse of where we should
focus our efforts to serve members better.
The Board is also in the process of beginning benchmarking
on costs. We intend to start at a macro level and focus
internally initially. The process will grow to a more detailed
view in the future, eventually having benchmarks that are
comparable to external sources. The purpose here is to
develop a set of indicators that tell us how well we are
managing costs and where effort should be focused for
improvement.
One more interesting initiative I would like to inform you of
is the start of a staff member service committee. This
committee consists of 14 staff from all departments. The goal
of the committee is to develop a uniform service philosophy
and strategy, making service both the top priority and
consistent everywhere throughout the Club. The committee’s
philosophy is summarized as CWC – “Certainly We Can”. I
look forward to updating you in the future as this committee
begins implementing this plan to engrain this service
philosophy throughout the Club.
Finally, I look forward to seeing many of you at the volunteer
appreciation evening on February 24 th . It’s always impressive
to see how well attended this event is, an indication of how
many people give of their time to contribute to our Club.
