In order to better isolate the effects <strong>of</strong> the land cover change all model runs were performed<br />

with the same model configuration, initial conditions and boundary conditions. As<br />

discussed all urban characteristics such as building heights, street widths, surface albedo<br />

and emissivity were kept constant. The meteorological conditions used for the series <strong>of</strong><br />

runs were those for a case study (6 th -7 th August 1998) for which the combined<br />

METRAS+BEP model performance was evaluated in Chapter 5. These were summertime<br />

anti-cyclonic conditions and part <strong>of</strong> an extended period <strong>of</strong> strong UHI conditions, clear<br />

skies and low winds.<br />
