Abstract:
This work is on the evolution of mass media effects since its origins, on the early
XX century, from the north american context of the Mass Communication Research. To
do this, we will revise the different paradigms and theories, with an important emphasis
on the historical context, and the simultaneous sociological and psychological working
paradigms. This work centres the attention on Noelle-Neumann’s theory of the spiral of
silence, as a consequence of the social construction of reality made by the mass media,
and analyzes the psychosocial effects of that theory; principally the fear of isolation, the
perception of the climate of opinion and the willingness to speak in public.
