IMPOSIBLE NO AMAR LA MÚSICA. Yann Tiersen sorprende. Lo hace cuando presenta sus discos, grabados con violines, acordeones o pianos, en un directo lleno de guitarrazos y pura energía, descomponiendo sus canciones hasta hacerlas prácticamente irreconocibles; lo hace cuando usa un taladro como instrumento sobre el escenario o el sonido de una máquina de escribir en sus discos; también cuando reniega del que fue su mayor éxito –involuntario-, aquellas canciones que acompañaron a Amélie Poulain por un París idílico que ahora él odia; o cuando echa pestes de Francia y de los franceses, él, cuyas melodías siguen alimentando el romanticismo, quizá impostado, envuelto para regalo, de las cuestas de Montmartre. Ahora publica ‘Dust Lane’ un año después de haberlo terminado. Lo presentará el 19 de noviembre en Barakaldo en un directo que nos sorprenderá, seguro. Y precisamente por eso nos gusta, porque nos sorprende. Llevas un tiempo presentado las canciones de ‘Dust Lane’ a pesar de que el disco no había salido a la venta. ¿Cómo ha recibido la gente tus nuevos temas? Muy bien. El disco estaba acabado hace un año y decidí salir de gira directamente y no esperar a su publicación. Se retrasó porque yo estaba cambiando de discográfica, buscando una que de verdad fuera buena, algo que, afortunadamente, al final ha ocurrido. Yo creo mucho en el directo, es la forma más sencilla tanto de hacer música como de hacerla llegar a la gente. ¿Cómo ha sido el proceso de cambiar de una discográfica multinacional como EMI a una independiente como Mute? Decidí cambiar porque noté que era el final de un ciclo. Yo nunca firmé por EMI, firmé con una pequeña compañía indie que dependía de Virgin Records, pero las fusiones hicieron que se convirtiera en una parte de EMI. De repente me vi rodeado en el catálogo de artistas mainstream, gente que no era santo de mi devoción. Mi forma de hacer y de entender la música casa mucho mejor con una compañía independiente. Por eso estoy feliz ahora en Mute, todo es más fácil, hablamos realmente de música. Además, creo que es importante sentirse cómodo con el resto de los artistas de la discográfica. El francés ha dejado de ser el idioma principal del disco. Ahora casi todos tus temas están en inglés. ¿Por qué? Para escribir una canción, algo que pienso que es es muy difícil, necesito sentirme libre musicalmente y, sinceramente, el francés es una lengua muy dura de encajar en las melodías. Por otro lado, necesito que el público entienda lo que digo y, obviamente, hay mucha más gente que habla inglés. Además, estoy cansado de Francia y del francés. Es un país muy extraño, pequeño pero con un gran ego. Ya no me siento cómodo aquí. Yo nací en Bretaña, que es parte de Francia, pero que en realidad está muy lejos de la Francia real, está más cercana al oeste que al este. De hecho en los últimos años he ido pasando menos tiempo en Francia. ¿Tiene este hartazgo algo que ver con la política? Por supuesto. Los franceses hicieron la elección equivocada hace unos años, está claro. Francia es un país durmiente. Nunca pasa nada. Estoy cansado de la arrogancia de los franceses. Sé que es un tópico, pero es cierto. Cuando estoy en el extranjero y me encuentro con compatriotas muchas veces pienso que son verdaderos gilipollas. Ahora podemos compartir muchas cosas con todo el mundo gracias a Internet o a las giras, puedes conocer gente distinta de todos los países, y Francia queda al margen de todo esto porque sigue centrada en su pequeño “Francia es un país durmiente. Hay dos países europeos que son así: Francia e Italia. Pero incluso esta última es mucho más abierta al mundo que Francia. En este disco hay más temas con letra... Siempre he tenido la intención de poner letras a mis temas, pero antes, cuando componía con letra, me estancaba en el concepto tradicional de canción: estrofa-estribillo-estrofa-estribillo. Por eso prefería hacer temas instrumentales, porque necesitaba sentirme libre, explorar, investigar, deconstruir sonidos… Eso ha cambiado en este álbum, me he sentido más cómodo a la hora de enfrentarme a una letra. He intentado hacer lo que se entiende por canciones, pero sin tener miedo a meter cuatro minutos instrumentales. Sí, da la sensación de que en ‘Dust Lane’ has investigado mucho sobre las
