ring, Bachrach, Taylor y colaboradores en la
purificación del virus y la enorme influencia de
los resultados obtenidos por Enders y colaboradores
en la aplicación de técnicas de cultivo de
tejidos en la propagación del virus de la poliomielitis
han cambiado totalmente el futuro de
esta rama importante de la medicina. Lo que
hace unos pocos años se consideraba imposible
de realizar, ahora se ve con más optimismo.
Esperemos que la lucha constante por con·
quistar este virus, que ha causado tanto daiio
a la humanidad, llegue a su fin, como ha sido
el caso de otras enfermedades importantes 1 •
SUi\IMARY
This paper presents a chronological review of
the methods which have been utilized in the
purification of the virus of poliomyelitis.
Of aH the methods employed the one which
has given the best results is a combination of
alcohol precipitation, Sharples centrifugation,
enzyme treatment and ultracentrifugation. By
these means, it has been possible to obtain the
three virus types in a high degree of purity. Chemical
and physical studies of the purified virus
particles habe shown that they are nucleoproteins
of the RNA type and that the nucleic acid
comprises about one fourth of the mass of the
particle.
These studies have also given more precise information
on the size, shape andsedimentation
rate of the virus and the relationship of these
physical properties to the specific infectivity.
It is also pointed out that there isgreat divergence
of opinion regarding the criteria to be
used in evaluating the purity of the 'various
prepara tions.
