Informe Técnico del PAC No. 39A five-year national programme for the conservation of sea turtles is proposed by thisRecovery Action Plan. The primary goals are to obtain specific and realistic information concerningthe distribution of critical habitat and to promote the conservation and recovery of the remainingpopulations of sea turtles in Venezuela. Recommended activities include a census of habitats andmarkets, management planning, training, and environmental education. In addition, effectivemanagement of these highly migratory and endangered reptiles will require that Venezuela supportregional agreements and international efforts such as CITES, MARPOL, the UNEP CartagenaConvention, and the Inter-American Convention for the Protection and Conservation of Sea Turtles.In order to ensure the implementation of and public support for relevant regulations, theparticipation of fishermen, conservation groups, governmental personnel, universities and concernedcitizens should be considered. It is absolutely necessary that coastal communities be involved andthat they take advantage of the various means of communication to promote public awareness. All ofthis is necessary and urgent if we expect our sea turtles (and other endangered wildlife species) andour coastal communities to survive.Página xii
