a seguir adelante.
During 1682, the coasts of
El Salvador were beseiged by the English pirates
commanded by Francis Drake; who between
1577 and 1579 sailed the world around and
isolated all the ports of the Spanish Empire in the
coasts of America; from Chile to California.
The legend says that when they went, they left a
wood box near the point of “Chiriquín”, in front
of Sacatillo’s Island. The box was taken over a
donkey’s back and taken to the city of San Miguel.
When the donkey arrived where the Cathedral is
now built, he bent his legs and denied to continue
on going. When the people opened the box, they
found a image of Virgin Mary.
The grandmothers from San Miguel say that
the appearance of Our Lady brought peace
to that divine city. It was then, that the people
named her as the patron of San Miguel with the
name “Virgen de la Paz”. Her festivity is made on
November 21st.
