glimmering snow flakes, ice crystals, crystals, lightness, sensitivity and hovering,
all describing the story of life and its stars. Working with the theme was
also affected by the knowledge of the users of the craft products in future. The
student writes:
Tradition is in my life an important basis from which I create a new one.
It is the context of my work and working. The tradition as a context is
present in both the furniture and my textiles which are now being examined.
As a consequence, I designed to a baby a kind of “sleeping bad bedspread”
and a pillow. They have been designed to continue the inheritance
of my family in which my life story is emphasized to the cradle, as it has
been designed for my family. The thought still is an adaptation of the idea
to someone else. In my textiles all my images and the starting point are
combined. Furthermore, the figures are central. The tradition is merely
reflected through textile material, techniques and historical photographs.
Bedclothes could also be made to someone else than the designer and in these
cases the becoming user was taken alone to the experiential space:
My princess theme started from the thought that girls will often have a sort
of a princess period at some stage of their childhood. My own goddaughter
is now three and a half years old and she likes to connect the princess
theme in every where. For me and my goddaughter’s parents a theme suitable
for the user was essential in design process. Because the products have
been designed into the child’s use, the planning process also contained
safety issues as an important part.
According to students above mentioned aspect of usability was experienced
as an essential one in the design process. The bed linen, for example, as being
above all the nearest to the skin, requires usability; the bed liners have to be
made of material that is pleasant and easy to care for.
Conclusion
This study proposed one incoming to the design of bedclothes in Textile
Teacher Education as well as to the cultural significances of the bed in our
culture. The study was connected with the Bed Project 2008 in which craft
techniques in making of bedclothes were shown from the present as well as
throughout history.
Even though two different kinds of data were included in the study, it is
possible to find factors which are supporting each other. When examining the
