Le contrôle préventif et répressif
de l’espionnage économique,
d’entreprise et industriel par la sécurité
privée en Belgique
Hilde DE CLERCK, Leen VAN SAND, Marc COOLS
The preventive and repressive control of economic, corporate and industrial
espionage by the private security sector in Belgium
The phenomenon of economic, corporate and industrial espionage is a daily reality in business life. Companies which
fall victim rarely take their case to the criminal courts. Instead they look for redress in a preventive and sometimes
repressive manner by using private security services. Belgium is the leading country in Europe for private security
services. In this presentation, we would like to look more closely at the criminological relationship between the
perpetrators, the acts, the victims, the causes and the consequences. We will examine economic espionage
(Schweizer, 1993), corporate espionage (Van Altert, 2000) and industrial espionage (Berger, 1971) in the context
of the problem of crimes committed by workers, which has already been investigated at length in Belgium.
