This process is aimed at engaging the company in continuous improvement of its performance and becoming the driving force behind ecoinnovation. Due to institutional impetus, directives, industrialists’ wills and consumers’ awareness, life cycle assessment has become an integral part of sustainable development. In this context, the CREER Cluster was founded in 2007 under the impulse of 7 lead companies and technical centres of excellence: Renault, Steelcase, Areva T&D, Plastic Omnium, Veolia Environnement, SEB Group, CETIM (Centre Technique des Industries Mécaniques), partnered with SERAM and MAPIE laboratory from the Chambéry ENSAM Institute. CREER’s first objective is to promote non-competitive research in Eco design and recycling of products. Close cooperation between industry, the scientific community and State organisations is building a knowledge base and tools for use by industry. This is done through an intelligent information platform, and working parties dealing with REACH regulation, Volatile Organic Compounds and Life Cycle Analysis. FOCUS ON THE LCA WORKGROUP MEMBERS : Creation of a communication guide on LCA The first objective of the LCA workgroup consists in drafting a communication guide on LCA. The guide will cover the stakes and issues inherent to Life Cycle Assessment and will include feedback on LCA experiences from companies and organisations involved in the workgroup. The purpose of this communication guide is to create an information database for decision makers within companies, communication services (marketing, external communications) and technical functions (R&D, production…) Indeed, LCA is a complex holistic approach, often hard to grasp for laymen. Current materials are either too technical or too broad. It also lacks practical examples of industrial utilization. For this reason, this guide will be based on industrial experience from each member to bring an implemented vision of LCA. 8

These meetings allow defining and validating key elements and other running projects. E-mail exchange and data sharing via CREER's online Member Platform allow the discussion progression, the validation of some intermediate points and drafted documents. The decision makers’ version of the guide will be available at the end of the year 2011. Guide structure Why LCA?
