NORWEGIAN EPIC - FREESTYLE CRUISING
Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) one of the world’s major
cruise companies was founded in 1966 as Caribbean
Line by Knut Kloster and Ted Arison later the founder of
Carnival Cruise Line. Fans of naval history will remember
NCL as the operator of the passenger ship France later
called Norway then the longest ship in the world.
Today when cruise holidays are growing in number NCL
has also chosen to enter the Mediterranean currently the
market with the highest margins. In 2010 NCL had two
ships in the Mediterranean, Norwegian Jade of 93,558
tons operating from Barcelona and Norwegian Gem of
93,530 operating from Venice and the first NCL vessel
based in Italy.
In 2011 Jade will replace Gem from Venice, and Barcelona
will be served by the new 155,873 ton giant admiral
of the fleet Norwegian Epic. She is 329,45 meters long
with 2,097 cabins for 5,186 passengers. The vessel was
built at STX France Cruise of Saint Nazaire and entered
service last summer.
The ship was designed for the freestyle cruising philosophy
of NCL which means offering passengers cruises
without limitations and without imposition from meal
times to dress rules. Norwegian Epic offers 11 eating
options in the basic fare and a further 9 with an extra
payment. Each on board restaurant offers typical dishes
of the best cuisines in the world from Italian to French,
Chinese and Japanese.
Norwegian Epic includes the world’s largest on board
spa extending to 2,883 square meters dedicated to fit-

oggi è uno dei maggiori operatori mondiali
nel campo delle crociere. Gli appassionati
di storia navale ricorderanno
questo nome soprattutto per aver rilevato
e gestito per parecchi anni il famo-
so transatlantico France, ribattezzato
poi Norway, quando questa gloriosa
unità era la nave passeggeri più lunga
del mondo.
Oggi in un momento di espansione
del mercato della vacanze sul mare,
anche questa compagnia ha iniziato a
puntare decisamente sul Mediterraneo,
il mercato che offre i più grossi margini
di sviluppo.
Già durante la stagione estiva 2010
sono state posizionate due navi di assoluto
prestigio nel “Mare Nostrum”:
la Norwegian Jade (93.558 t.s.l.) con
home port a Barcellona e soprattutto la
Norwegian Gem (93.530 t.s.l.) basata
a Venezia. Quest’ultima è stata la prima
nave della storia della compagnia
ad essere dedicata quindi al mercato
italiano.
Durante la stagione croceristica
2011 la “Jade” sostituirà la “Gem” a
ness, wellness and regeneration of body and mind.
Named Mandara Spa the centre includes 24 treatment
rooms,Turkish baths, hydrotherapy, gymnasium and
beauty centre. 39 of the ships cabins have direct access
to the Spa.
The VIP zone is situated at the prow of the ship on decks
16 and 17 with swimming pool, hydro-massage, gymnasium,
nightclub and private dining area. This area of the
ship recalls the 1 st class on luxury transatlantic liners
and is available to passengers staying in suites, penthouses
and villas.
There are many types of cabin available catering for all
categories of passenger. 128 studio cabins with a special
tariff have been designed for singles, a first for a cruise
ship. All the cabins with balconies are curved and named
“new wave”, again a first.
Taking a freestyle cruise on Norwegian Epic also means
a splendid water park, two separate bowling areas and
a vast selection of entertainments throughout the ship.
The first “ice bar” is to be found on board as well as a
prow area named Spice H2O where a pool can be enjoyed
during the day and at night a beach club such as is found
on Ibiza.
Norwegian Epic will be positioned in the Western Mediterranean
from May until October departing from Barcelona
and calling at Livorno, Civitavecchia, Naples and
Palma di Majorca. Italian passengers can enjoy the unforgettable
