Messina e Augusta. Il settore della logistica
e dei trasporti ha assunto un
ruolo strategico nel sistema Italia in termini
economici e occupazionali. Anche
in Sicilia, nel settore, servono progetti
che… navighino spediti per aggirare, e

The Port Authorities of Palermo, Messina and Augusta
have joined together in a stand at the Transport Logistic
2011 conference in Munich. Logistics and transport now
have a strategic economic and employment role in Italy’s
economy. Sicily’s logistics and transport also need to
move quickly to get over the crisis which has slowed down
world trade. Palermo port is working to offer satisfactory
services and up to date standards of functionality and
comfort. The architect Italo Rolo has designed a project
for the modernisation of the passenger terminal. Work
on the 28,5 million euro project will start soon. Tenders
are going out for a number of jobs. 2 million euros for the
port illumination system. 4.5 million euros for safety and
security systems which is in progress. 1 million euros for
reorganising the Amari port entrance. 8 million euros has
already been spent on Cala the old Palermo port where
work will be finished by the beginning of summer.
Palermo expects record numbers of cruise ship
passengers this year but in 2010 registered a 9,6% fall in
container handling caused by the overall crisis However
Palermo thanks to its joining forces with Termini Imerese
has contained the fall in traffic. In fact the Termini Imerese
freight tonnage has more than tripled in the last three
years from 490,000 tons in 2008 to 1,723,841 in 2010 with
an especially strong performance from bulk and general
freight. Forecasts for the period 2011/2013 are bright
for Termini Imerese helped by the work carried out to
improve the functioning of the port. Lighting has been

progetto dell’architetto Italo Rota e con
un investimento di 28 milioni e 500 mila
euro. Quindi stanno per essere ap-
paltati i lavori per la razionalizzazione
dell’impianto elettrico per l’illuminazione
del porto, per un importo complessivo
2 milioni. Quattro milioni e mezzo
sono stati destinati ai lavori (in corso) di
security e sicurezza, 1 milione è stato
impiegato per la sistemazione del Varco
Amari mentre all’inizio dell’estate
verranno ultimati i lavori di sistemazione
(già concluso l’intervento di disinquinamento)
della Cala, l’antico porto di

The ports of Messina - Tremestiere and Milazzo form a
complicated port structure handling various types of
maritime traffic which taken together make them a unique
system in Italy. Messina - Tremestiere basically handles
traffic between Sicily and the mainland using ferries
to carry passengers, vehicles and rail cars as well as
cruise traffic. On the other hand Milazzo handles traffic
for the Eolie islands in addition to hydrocarbon liquid
bulk. However neither of the ports can be considered
as specialised in only one type of traffic. Ro-ro already
operates with a Messina/Salerno line. Growth prospects
for ro-ro are such that substantial work should be
carried out in both the ports of Messina and Milazzo.
At the moment Messina is spending 1,5 million euros
to complete a 15,000 sq mt parking area at Norimberga
wharf which will improve the parking and stocking area
for trucks and trailers waiting to take the Motorways of
the Sea vessels.
Milazzo mainly handles traffic to the Eolie islands plus
considerable quantities of carbohydrate bulk from the
nearby refinery. Work is in progress to get over the
current operational limitations of the port represented by
the depth of the water and the lack of ferry piers. The port
plan also includes development of shipyard work and the
substantial amount of work needed to recover the city’s
waterfront.
