after three months, I called him: “Maestro, this is Amendola, I don’t
know if you remember me... we met in Rome, about three months
ago at Pericle Fazzini’s.” And Burri responded: “Certainly I remember
you, come and see me, but don’t bring your camera.” I thought: “well
that’s a good start!”
Without my Hasselblad, and convinced that it was not going to be
much more than a day out, I set off with my wife Lella for Città di
Castello. The artist was in the company of Nemo Sarteanesi, your father,
whom I later got to know and appreciate. From then on, in fact,
on every occasion I met Burri, he was there too. Later I found out they
had known each other as children and that they were bound together
by a deep esteem.
Although two of my artist friends from Pistoia, Barni and Ruffi, had
told me that Burri was the best of them all, a great and important artist,
I hadn’t really taken this fact on board. I approached him with a degree
of timidity, but not that much to tell the truth, and not with the reverent
awe that the occasion required. I had already photographed Pisano
and Marini’s work and felt fairly sure of myself.
CS: Knowing Burri well, I imagine that he subjected you to some sort of examination
to see if you were equal to the situation.
AA: Yes, of course, I was given a little test as you say! He wanted to
know, in great detail, what cameras I used, and whether I worked alone
or with assistants.
Sarteanesi, in the meantime, was looking with interest at the books on
Marini and Pisano that I had brought with me and I noted the looks of
approval that he exchanged with Burri: it was a team effort!
In the end the artist dictated his terms and invited me to come to
his studio at Case Nove and photograph him during the creation of a
“combustion.” With the camera, yes, but no assistant.
I wasn’t familiar with his work and didn’t know what he meant by
that word “combustion.” Up until then, I had dealt with sculptors
and painters who operated with the traditional means of these two
In seguito ho capito
Tornando a quel giorno, Burri accettò l’invito e ci raggiunse. Fazzini
Contrariamente a quanto
