BURRI AND THE PHOTOGRAPHER
BURRI E IL FOTOGRAFO
aurelio amendola
I met Burri in 1976 through the sculptor Pericle Fazzini, with whom
I was working in that period. It took a sort of “trick” to overcome his
initial mistrust, and this already says a great deal about his personality.
The fact of being able to legitimately present myself to everyone as
Marino Marini’s photographer was a wonderful passkey: it has opened
some very difficult doors for me, commencing with those of Andy
Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, to mention just the first two names that
spring to mind. With Burri it didn’t work; notwithstanding the great admiration
he had for Marino, it was something that left him indifferent
and above all little inclined to get involved. So the initial contact was
needed and after it a whole set of other things, including of course my
professional skills, but not those alone. From that time until his death
our relationship grew ever closer, becoming in every respect a true and
deep friendship, one that went beyond the bounds of work. The fruits,
for me, have been immense, on the human as well as the professional
plane. It suffices to think of the photograph that has become the
emblem of Burri in the world, and that has contributed greatly to my
reputation, as much as have my photos of de Chirico in Venice or the
ones of Michelangelo’s works. But I think I can say without fear of contradiction
that it has at the same time done good service in promoting
his image and his art.
On the occasion of the tribute that my city is paying to this great artist,
however, I have no intention of going back over the various stages in
the twenty years of our association. I already did this three years ago,
at the time of an exhibition of mine in Nice devoted to the series of
Combustions. The exhibition was held at the gallery run by Antonio
Sapone, who had been Burri’s dealer in France, as well as that of fig-
quale stavo lavorando in quel periodo.
soprattutto poco propenso a farsi coinvolgere. Fu necessario l’aggancio
