THE GRANDE CRETTO – The Grande
Cretto or Big Crack deserves a separate discussion.
I happened to meet up with Burri immediately
after his return from Gibellina, and
I remember the experience as if I had been
talking to a climber just after he had conquered
K2 rather than a visual artist. I saw a
happy man but one overcome with emotion.
He started by saying that when he arrived at
the place where the new Gibellina was being
built he realized that he would never be
able to create a work there. Before leaving he
went to see the ruins left by the earthquak

1980 all’11 gennaio 1981.
Per l’occasione Burri realizzò anche una
scultura che installò nella mostra e che oggi
si trova all’interno della Rocca Paolina di
Perugia.
IL GRANDE CRETTO – L’opera meriterebbe
un capitolo a parte. Occasionalmente
ho avuto un incontro con Burri subito
dopo il suo rientro da Gibellina, ho memorizzato
l’avvenimento come se invece di
avere incontrato un artista visuale avessi
parlato con un rocciatore dopo aver scalato
il K/2. Ho visto un uomo felice ma sopraffatto
dall’emozione; ha iniziato dicendo
