In the catalogue published at the time there
is an interview with me conducted by Chiara
Sarteanesi, in which I had the opportunity
to tell the story of our relationship in considerable
detail. I would only be repeating myself,
and now I feel it would be preferable to
single out one particularly intense episode
from those already recounted.
I am referring—as might be guessed—to
the great fortune which has been given to
me of acting as an intermediary (and postman)
between those two authentic masters
of 20th-century art, Burri and Marini.
Marino comes from the same city as me, but
when I began my activity he had already
spent a long time away from Pistoia. In fact it
could be said that, as often happens in these
cases, he no longer had any ties with the city
of his birth. I had met him the year before,
but his real return to Pistoia (which marked
the beginning of a progressive rapprochement)
came in 1968, thanks to Arrigo Valiani,
who organized an exhibition of his work in
the city. For that time on I became Marino’s
photographer, something that has done me
great honor and has also been extremely
useful in furthering my career. Above and
beyond the considerable boost to my image,
I could point out that it allowed me to meet
Henry Moore and Marc Chagall, or that it
has served as an introduction to some of the
most important collectors of art, including
the Agnelli family! With Marino too, deera
stato anche di personaggi come Picasso,
Giacometti o Hartung. Nel catalogo realizzato
allora c’è una mia intervista curata da
Chiara Sarteanesi, e lì ho già avuto modo di
raccontare molte delle vicende che hanno
contrassegnato questo rapporto. Non potrei
che ripetermi, e adesso mi pare preferibile
invece la breve intensità di un unico episodio
tra quelli già raccontati.
Mi riferisco – è quasi scontato – alla grande
fortuna che mi è toccata in sorte: quella
di fare da tramite (e da postino) tra due autentici
maestri del Novecento quali Burri e
Marini.
Marino è un mio concittadino, ma quando
ho cominciato la mia attività era già lontano
da tempo da Pistoia. Si potrebbe tranquillamente
aggiungere che, come spesso avviene
in questi casi, non aveva più rapporti con la
città natale. L’avevo conosciuto l’anno prima,
ma il vero ritorno a Pistoia (che segnò
l’avvio di un progressivo riavvicinamento)
avvenne grazie ad Arrigo Valiani nel 1968,
che gli organizzò una mostra. Dopo di allora
divenni, per l’appunto, il fotografo di
Marino, cosa che mi ha onorato tantissimo
e che mi è stata di grande utilità nel proseguimento
della mia carriera. Al di là del
considerevole ritorno d’immagine, potrei limitarmi
ad aggiungere che mi ha fatto conoscere
Henry Moore e Marc Chagall, oppure
che mi ha introdotto presso i più importanti
collezionisti d’arte, fino agli Agnelli! Anche
con Marino, nonostante una certa differenza
