AA: That was a striking work with its nine-meter-high arches! No one
could have ignored it, partly because you had to pass under it to get to
the various pavilions. I took a picture at it of Burri and Calvesi talking.
I had a great time in those days too, on top of the pleasure of being
there as a photographer.
One evening we were sitting in St. Mark’s Square with a bunch of artists
and Burri had the idea of organizing a soccer match for charity, right
there in the square! And he started to take measurements to mark out
the pitch.
CS: And then?
AA: Nothing happened, it was too complicated! I’ll tell you another
very amusing story about that time. At the Biennale everyone would
go to eat at the restaurant and the place was terribly crowded. Burri
didn’t want to stand in line. So we went with Bacchi to buy beer and
sandwiches to eat with him and Burri, on one of the benches in the gardens
of the Biennale. It became a meeting place: Lichtenstein came
by and got himself a sandwich so as to be with us, Ceroli [Mario, editor’s
note] ate with us, as did Pistoletto [Michelangelo, editor’s note], Gori,
Sapone, Portoghesi and others, so that every day we had to lay in more
provisions to feed any other passersby who joined in. I really enjoyed
photographing those unforgettable moments!
CS: In front of the entrance of the Fattoria di Celle, one of the most important
collections of environmental art in the world, created by Giuliano Gori, stands
the sculpture Celle Big Iron [Grande Ferro Celle] of 1986 which you have
photographed on several occasions.
AA: In 1985 Gori had invited Burri to make a sculpture for his collection,
but the places he suggested inside the garden were not to the
artist’s liking. The negotiations took a long time and, during their numerous
meetings, he would sometimes stop to have lunch with me.
Not long before I had bought, near Celle, the house that Burri called
aveva dissaldato alcuni elementi.
Hai ragione, ho sempre
