White Plastic 2 [Bianco plastica 2, 1962] along with White Crack [Bianco
Cretto], 1973 and Black Crack [Cretto nero, 1973] introduced an ulcerated
material subjected to a controlled crumbling, as if a numen had guided
the effects of an earthquake. That that numen is the artist himself is
made clear by the insertion into the Black Crack of a round piece of
tin from a can riddled with holes by shots fired from a gun by Burri
himself. “Albedo” and “nigredo” of an almost alchemical process of
transformation of the material employed in the creation of these works.
And finally, White Plastic 2 is as desolately sorrowful and dramatic as Cellotex,
1982, the polychrome work that is the last from Gori’s precious collection,
is filled with golden, positive and even heraldically merry relations.
But I would not be doing the exhibition full justice if I did not mention
the extensive collection of photographs by Aurelio Amendola, a worthy
appendix that bears witness, among other things, to the relationship
of this photographer and many other people with Burri. Outstanding
among the now legendary pictures is the sequence depicting Burri
during the combustion of a sheet of plastic in which we see the flame
take on substance in Burri’s own body, in a magical and truly unique
set of images. But there are numerous other portraits of Burri, working
on Cellotex with a cutter, or at the center of Wright’s spiral in the
Guggenheim Museum or underneath his Theater at the Venice Biennale
with his back to the lens.
Amendola has also presented us with a gallery of portraits of Burri’s
friends, people like Nemo Sarteanesi, Peppino Palazzoli, Alberto
Zanmatti, Enrico Castellani, Cesare Brandi, Vittorio Rubiu, Mario
Ceroli, Emilio Vedova, Antonio Sapone, Michelangelo Pistoletto,
Burri’s wife Minsa Craig and Giuliano Gori. These photos in particular
are of great help in reconstructing around the figure of this great artist
the network of human relations that played such an important and significant
role in his life and his work.
spalle all’obiettivo.
Enrico Castellani, Cesare Brandi, Vittorio Rubiu, Mario Ceroli,
Emilio Vedova, Antonio Sapone, Michelangelo Pistoletto, la stessa moglie
di Burri Minsa Craig e Giuliano Gori. Queste foto in particolare
