apologized and expressed his hope that
things would go better at a future meeting.
Unwilling to give up on the exhibition,
however, Camarlinghi took me aside and
begged me to find an alternative solution.
In fact Burri agreed to the subsequent proposal
to use the upper part of the church of
Orsanmichele, after carrying out an inspection
and being struck by the possibility of
presenting his creations in one of the most
exquisite settings in Florence. The only
condition he imposed was the blocking up
of the windows, as he wanted attention to
be focused on the works. The exhibition,
accompanied by a catalogue edited by Vanni
Bramante, was held from November 15,
1980, to January 11, 1981.
Burri made a sculpture for the exhibition as
mostra di artisti americani, nella quale erano
state inserite a sua insaputa alcuni suoi
lavori con attribuzioni sbagliate e allestiti in
modo indegno.
Burri, nel salutare l’Assessore, si scusò auspicando
un futuro incontro più favorevole.
Camarlinghi, però, non volendo in nessun
modo rinunciare alla mostra, chiamatomi in
disparte, mi sollecitò di trovare una soluzione
alternativa. .
Alla successiva proposta di usare la parte superiore
della Chiesa di Orsanmichele Burri,
dopo aver fatto il sopralluogo e restato colpito
dalla possibilità di poter usare uno degli
scrigni più preziosi di Firenze, dette conferma
ponendo come unica clausola la chiusura
delle finestre, poiché voleva richiamare
una maggiore attenzione alle opere. La
