IN PRIMO PIANO
nellate. Il 2024 dovrebbe veder crescere le
percentuali di riciclo per ogni singolo materiale
di imballaggio. Le previsioni parlano del 77,8%
per l’acciaio (409.000 tonnellate), del 73% per
l’alluminio (64.000 tonnellate), dell’85,6% per
la carta (4 milioni e 298.000 tonnellate), del
65,1% per il legno (2 milioni e 130.000 tonnellate),
del 52% di plastica e bioplastica compostabile
(1 milione e 183.000 tonnellate, di cui
circa 51.000 di bioplastica), e dell’85,9% di vetro
(2 milioni e 325.000 tonnellate).
Concentrandoci, per quanto ci compete, soprattutto
sulla filiera dei metalli, il Rapporto
evidenzia che sia la produzione sia l’immesso
al consumo di imballaggi di acciaio sono in fase
calante. Nel 2022, la produzione mondiale è
stata pari a circa 1,89 miliardi di tonnellate,
registrando una flessione del -3,9% (-77 milioni
di tonnellate) sul 2021. Il rallentamento ha
interessato soprattutto i Paesi europei. Nello
2021). Altrettanto le quantità avviate a riciclo
(418.000 tonnellate, pari a +7,2% rispetto al
vergine prodotte a livello globale. A fronte di
una disponibilità sempre minore di alluminio
vergine, negli ultimi decenni è cresciuta molto
la produzione di alluminio secondario, che oramai
supera i 30 milioni di tonnellate. In questo
senso, l’Europa fa da modello. Secondo l’associazione
assoluti. Ma siamo i primi nella produzione di
alluminio secondario. Gli imballaggi in alluminio,
infatti, hanno raggiunto un tasso di riciclo
del 74%, ben oltre il 60% previsto dall’Ue. Questo
permette di prevedere che, entro il 2030,
in Italia si produrrà solo alluminio secondario
da riciclo.
proach that we can define today as the circular
economy before the term was even coined.
According to Conai’s latest estimates, for 2024
it is assumed that packaging recycling rates in
Italy could reach 75%: more than 10,300,000
tons of packaging waste will find a second
life, i.e. 74.9% of the total amount released for
consumption, which this year is expected to
be about 13, 900,000 tons. 2024 should see
the recycling rate for every single packaging
material increase. Forecasts point to 77.8%
for steel (409,000 tons), 73% for aluminium
(64,000 tons), 85.6% for paper (4,298,000
tons), 65.1% for wood (2,130,000 tons), 52% for
plastic and compostable bioplastic (1,183,000
tons, of which approx. 51,000 bioplastic), and
85.9% for glass (2,325,000 tons).
Focusing, as far as we are concerned, first and
foremost on the metals supply chain, the Report
highlights that both production as well as
steel packaging for consumption are in decline.
In 2022, global production was about 1.89 billion
tons, recording a drop of -3.9% (-77 million
tons) on 2021. The slowdown involved mainly
European countries. Specifically in Italy, the
drop was -11.5% (-2.8 million tons), while the
decrease in steel packaging for recycling was
6.7%. The collection of packaging however increased
(490,000 tons, +5.6% on 2021). The
same goes for the quantities for recycling
(418,000 tons, up 7.2% on 2021). Lastly, the
rate of packaging for consumption was 81%,
with an increase of over ten percentage points
on 2021. The recycling target of 80% for 2030
was thus reached .
As regards aluminium, however, 68 million tons
of virgin raw material were produced globally.
Faced with less and less availability of virgin
aluminium, in recent decades the production
of secondary aluminium has increased a lot,
now exceeding 30 million tons. In this regard,
Europe is a model. According to the European
Aluminium association, about 6 million tons of
aluminium were produced on our continent in
2022, of which 80% from scrap and less than
20% from virgin raw material. Italy is the second
largest EU producer of aluminium, after
Germany, in absolute terms. But we are the
largest producer of secondary aluminium. Aluminium
packaging reached a recycling rate of
74%, well over the 60% required by the EU. This
allows us to predict that by 2030 only secondary
aluminium will be produced from recycling.
