Europe Week 2014
Det nærmer seg 100 års markeringen av den
største yacht regattaen i Norges historie. I 1914
samlet man store Schooner Class, 19 metere og
15 metere og helt nedover til små folkelige
båter, med markering i Horten og Oslo.
I år 2000 arrangerte KTK Europe Week
med stor suksess! Det var tilsammen 126 båter
med fra 9 nasjoner i hyggelig seilaser/regattaer
over 2 uker! Vi fikk masse støtte fra sponsorer
og forskjellige kommuner, og kunne tilby våre
gjester nesten 2 uker med gratis middager og
eventer i de byene vi dro til.
Here we are twelve years on from our big effort
in the year 2000, when we had been encouraged
to hold a big Classic Yacht Event by the
then Mayor of Oslo, Per Ditlev Simonsen, to
celebrate Oslo’s Millenium.. It seemed right to
strive after “A loud echo from the Past”. Three
years earlier, in 1997, KTK had hosted a meeting
of the delegates from the various clubs
deciding to establish the European Classic
Yacht Union. I showed the film of Europe
Week1914, which caused a minor sensation,
forgotten as it had been for many years. KTK
had helped pay for the restoration of the film
and conversion to Videotape by the Norwegian
Film Institute/ Norwegian Maritime Museum.
Suddenly the 1914 event was brought alive
by actually seeing the yachts compete, and the
garden party at Sam Eyde’s residence on
Bygdøy showed vividly how high society enjoyed
themselves. There is also a scene with
spectators and ordinary yachtsmen in Horten
harbour.
Sam Eyde, the founder and director of
Norsk Hydro, had been elected Commodore
of the Royal Norwegian Yacht Club a year
earlier. It was a smart move to get him involved,
because he had contacts in the highest
circles in Germany. He persuaded the Kaiser to
send up three German schooners (mega-yachts
for racing). Even more remarkable, he went on
a mission to the Spanish King pleading that
Trolig blir arrangementet
lagt til midt i juli 2014.
Planen er å holde på i en uke slik man
gjorde da. Vi ønsker å få med oss alle typer
båter og størrelser. Vi skal klargjøre program
Norway, with her centenary celebrations of the
1814 constitution declaring her independence,
should be allowed to hold the European Week
for 1914, so that the Spanish would wait until
1915.
Johan Anker, Vice-Commodore, must have
done his utmost to draw attention to the
coming event in England; how high in the
yachting hierarchy he reached is unclear, and
for some reason, King George V, himself a keen
yachtsman, was probably not approached personally.
Nevertheless, two 15 metres were sent
over for the event. What is surprising is the lack
of participation by the French, since they had
arranged the Week in 1913 off Le Havre.
The great event with circa 135 yachts actually
competing but many more coming as
spectators, started on 15 July 1914 down in
Horten. King Haakon was there the whole
week, following the races and by his presence
adding glamour to the numerous social events
held in the naval quarter. And when the yachts
came up to Kristiania (Oslo), he attended the
final banquet and gave away the prizes. This
was noteworthy royal support.
What then is the historical significance of
European Week 1914? It was the second time
that a big yachting event was linked to an exhibition
portraying the achievements of a nation
( I am thinking of how the 1851 race down at
Cowes with the schooner America as guest was
linked to the Great Exhibition up in London).
The original brochure shows that it was also an
EUROPEAN WEEK 1914
– some reflections
AV CHRIS ENNALS
tee, and also the royal yacht clubs of the Danes
and Swedes, because the intention was to
continue the sailing event with a passage race
down to Marstrand and onto Copenhagen, to
show off Scandinavian waters as a great place
for sailing; this applied perhaps especially to
German yachtsmen. And the contemporary
sources indicate that for this magical week,
Paradise reigned, with Germans Norwegians,
Danes, Swedes and English all good friends
with each other, enjoying good sport and great
parties, the last glorious summer holiday in the
shadow of the Great War which was soon to
shatter the civilised world of the leading
European nations.
