Europe Week 2014<br />
Det nærmer seg 100 års markeringen av den<br />
største yacht regattaen i Norges historie. I 1914<br />
samlet man store Schooner Class, 19 metere og<br />
15 metere og helt nedover til små folkelige<br />
båter, med markering i Horten og Oslo.<br />
I år 2000 arrangerte KTK Europe Week<br />
med stor suksess! Det var tilsammen 126 båter<br />
med fra 9 nasjoner i hyggelig seilaser/regattaer<br />
over 2 uker! Vi fikk masse støtte fra sponsorer<br />
og forskjellige kommuner, og kunne tilby våre<br />
gjester nesten 2 uker med gratis middager og<br />
eventer i de byene vi dro til.<br />
Here we are twelve years on from our big effort<br />
in the year 2000, when we had been encouraged<br />
to hold a big Classic Yacht Event by the<br />
then Mayor of Oslo, Per Ditlev Simonsen, to<br />
celebrate Oslo’s Millenium.. It seemed right to<br />
strive after “A loud echo from the Past”. Three<br />
years earlier, in 1997, KTK had hosted a meeting<br />
of the delegates from the various clubs<br />
deciding to establish the European Classic<br />
Yacht Union. I showed the film of Europe<br />
Week1914, which caused a minor sensation,<br />
forgotten as it had been for many years. KTK<br />
had helped pay for the restoration of the film<br />
and conversion to Videotape by the Norwegian<br />
Film Institute/ Norwegian Maritime Museum.<br />
Suddenly the 1914 event was brought alive<br />
by actually seeing the yachts compete, and the<br />
garden party at Sam Eyde’s residence on<br />
Bygdøy showed vividly how high society enjoyed<br />
themselves. There is also a scene with<br />
spectators and ordinary yachtsmen in Horten<br />
harbour.<br />
Sam Eyde, the founder and director of<br />
Norsk Hydro, had been elected Commodore<br />
of the Royal Norwegian Yacht Club a year<br />
earlier. It was a smart move to get him involved,<br />
because he had contacts in the highest<br />
circles in Germany. He persuaded the Kaiser to<br />
send up three German schooners (mega-yachts<br />
for racing). Even more remarkable, he went on<br />
a mission to the Spanish King pleading that<br />

Son – Regattadag Son - Oslo med regatta dag<br />
med stor avslutningsfest. Trolig blir arrangementet<br />
lagt til midt i juli 2014.<br />
Planen er å holde på i en uke slik man<br />
gjorde da. Vi ønsker å få med oss alle typer<br />
båter og størrelser. Vi skal klargjøre program<br />
Norway, with her centenary celebrations of the<br />
1814 constitution declaring her independence,<br />
should be allowed to hold the European Week<br />
for 1914, so that the Spanish would wait until<br />
1915.<br />
Johan Anker, Vice-Commodore, must have<br />
done his utmost to draw attention to the<br />
coming event in England; how high in the<br />
yachting hierarchy he reached is unclear, and<br />
for some reason, King George V, himself a keen<br />
yachtsman, was probably not approached personally.<br />
Nevertheless, two 15 metres were sent<br />
over for the event. What is surprising is the lack<br />
of participation by the French, since they had<br />
arranged the Week in 1913 off Le Havre.<br />
The great event with circa 135 yachts actually<br />
competing but many more coming as<br />
spectators, started on 15 July 1914 down in<br />
Horten. King Haakon was there the whole<br />
week, following the races and by his presence<br />
adding glamour to the numerous social events<br />
held in the naval quarter. And when the yachts<br />
came up to Kristiania (Oslo), he attended the<br />
final banquet and gave away the prizes. This<br />
was noteworthy royal support.<br />
What then is the historical significance of<br />
European Week 1914? It was the second time<br />
that a big yachting event was linked to an exhibition<br />
portraying the achievements of a nation<br />
( I am thinking of how the 1851 race down at<br />
Cowes with the schooner America as guest was<br />
linked to the Great Exhibition up in London).<br />
The original brochure shows that it was also an<br />
attempt by the Norwegian organising commit-<br />

i tillegg til omtale i pressen, både i Norge og i<br />
utlandet.<br />
Vi håper dette er noe alle kan glede seg til,<br />
og at man nå har litt tid til å få orden på både<br />
båt og mannskap til den store seilerfesten!<br />

tee, and also the royal yacht clubs of the Danes<br />
and Swedes, because the intention was to<br />
continue the sailing event with a passage race<br />
down to Marstrand and onto Copenhagen, to<br />
show off Scandinavian waters as a great place<br />
for sailing; this applied perhaps especially to<br />
German yachtsmen. And the contemporary<br />
sources indicate that for this magical week,<br />
Paradise reigned, with Germans Norwegians,<br />
Danes, Swedes and English all good friends<br />
with each other, enjoying good sport and great<br />
parties, the last glorious summer holiday in the<br />
shadow of the Great War which was soon to<br />
shatter the civilised world of the leading<br />
European nations.<br />
