Monrovia. Om bord befi nner det seg
rundt fi re hundre voksne frivillige og
rundt femti av deres barn. Noen er der
på langtidskontrakter, mens andre kun
har korte opphold på båten. En håndfull
av dem er norske, deriblant skipets
leder, Solfrid Quist.
spartanske lokaler i Stavanger. Der jobber
blant andre informasjonskonsulent
Linda May Kallestein. – Mercy Ships
Mercy Ships is an international, humanitarian organisation
which has operated hospital ships since the late seventies. Th eir
help may give many poor people a second chance in life.
Until this year, the fl eet was made up
of ”Anastasis” and the ”Caribbean
Mercy” (originally the Coastal Steamer
”Polarlys”). Both these vessels have
now been retired in favour of the
”Africa Mercy”, which is about to end
her fi rst voyage by the Liberian capital,
Monrovia. On board there are around
four hundred adult volunteers and
around fi fty of their children. Some are
there on long-term contracts, while others
only stay on the ship for short periods of
time. A handful of them are Norwegian,
among others the ship manager, Solfrid
Quist. Soon, a Norwegian dentist and
his family will also board the ”Africa
Mercy” for a period of two years. Th e
work carried out is very important for a
country in which three and a half million
inhabitants normally have to share fi ve
doctors and three dentists.
BRANNSKADD. – Med en ødelagt hånd kunne det
vært vanskelig for denne lille jenta å klare seg, forteller
informasjonskonsulent Linda May Kallestein, som
diffi cult for this little girl to manage, says public relations
offi cer Linda May Kallestein, who has brought
a “get well soon” card from a Norwegian child. Several
hundred such cards have been sent from schools and
kinder gardens in Norway.
kapasitet. Operasjon av øyekatarr er
Ships has stretched the concept of
”voluntariness ” to its extremes, she says.
– Not only do the people on board
work without wages – they also pay
their own room and board, their travelling
expenses to and from the ship, as well
as all insurance.
Th e exception is the maritime apprentices
and midshipmen who receive some
wages, as well as the seafarers who are
essential to safe operation of the ship, if in
periods, there are not enough volunteers.
Priority to
Th e hospital’s main focus is on certain
types of treatment, and prior to the ship’s
arrival, the country has been visited by a
representative from Mercy Ships who
has carried out a pre-selection of patients
based on need and capacity. Operation
of eye infections is a priority, as this is a
