Dear John and Mary,
I was pleasantly surprised to receive an invitation from the ALICE project to write you a letter. Your names,
John and Mary, are the symbols of European culture and identity. John, Juan, Jan, Jean, Mary, Maria, Marietje,
Marie: the language is different, but the identity is the same.
I was also surprised by the content of the invitation itself. It states: “Europe as it is today … has little or
nothing to teach the world. Moreover, it does not even have a socially acceptable and fair solution for its
own domestic problems. It would be advantageous for Europe to learn from the experiences of the rest of
the world, yet five centuries of colonialism seem to have made it incapable of learning from those it has
always considered inferior.”
But for decades I have been taught that the reverse is true: Non-Europeans have little to teach the world.
All relevant knowledge comes from Europe. All solutions for world problems are only valid when it has the
stamp of European approval. So imagine my astonishment when I learned that there is a voice in Europe
that contradicts this view.
In 1970 I migrated at the age of fifteen with my parents from Suriname, a former Dutch
colony, to Holland. I went to secondary school in The Hague and studied economics at the
University in Rotterdam.
I learned what Adam Smith and David Ricardo had to say. I discovered how to use mathematics in economic
science with the idea that social systems can be managed in the way you manage machines.
I read European philosophers from the Enlightment: Hume, Locke, Hegel, Kant. I joined the Dutch socialist
movement in protesting women’s oppression and supporting the struggle against Apartheid in South Africa
and colonialism in Angola.

John e Mary, são os símbolos da cultura e identidade Europeias. John, Juan, Jan, Jean, Mary, Maria, Marietje,
Marie: a língua é diferente, mas a identidade é a mesma.
Também fiquei surpreso com o conteúdo do convite ele mesmo. Declara: “A Europa tal como se encontra
hoje... tem pouco ou nada a ensinar ao mundo. Para mais, nem sequer tem uma solução justa e social-
mente aceitável para os seus próprios problemas domésticos. Seria vantajoso para a Europa aprender com
as experiências do resto do mundo, mas no entanto cinco séculos de colonialismo parecem tê-la tornado
incapaz de aprender com aqueles que sempre considerou como inferiores.”
Mas durante décadas foi-me ensinado que o reverso é verdadeiro: os não-europeus pouco têm para ensinar
ao mundo. Todo o conhecimento relevante advém da Europa. Todas as soluções para os problemas mundiais
são apenas válidas mediante o selo de aprovação europeu. Por isso, imagine o meu espanto quando tomei
conhecimento que existe uma voz na Europa que contradiz esta visão.
Em 1970 migrei com os meus pais do Suriname, uma antiga colónia holandesa, para a Holanda.
Frequentei o ensino secundário em Haia e estudei economia na Universidade de Roterdão.
Aprendi o que Adam Smith e David Ricardo tinham para dizer. Descobri como usar a matemática na ciência
económica tendo em mente que sistemas sociais podem ser geridos da mesma forma que se gerem máquinas.
Li filósofos europeus do Iluminismo: Hume, Locke, Hegel, Kant. Juntei-me ao movimento socialista holandês
que protestava contra a opressão das mulheres e que apoiava a luta contra o Apartheid na África do Sul e
o colonialismo em Angola.
