About ALICE
ALICE – Strange Mirrors, Unsuspected Lessons: Leading Europe
to a new way of sharing the world experiences.
ALICE is a research project coordinated by Boaventura de Sousa
Santos and financed by the European Research Council (ERC),
one of the most prestigious and highly competitive international
financial institutes for scientific excellence in Europe.
The project ALICE seeks to re-think and renovate socio-scientific
knowledge in light of the epistemologies of the South, proposed
by Boaventura de Sousa Santos. The objective is to develop new
theoretical and political paradigms of social transformation.
Haunting Europe and the Global North as a whole, there is a
sentiment of intellectual and political exhaustion which translates
as incapacity to confront innovatively the various challenges
of justice that interpellate the world in the first decades of the
twenty-first century: social, environmental, inter-generational,
cultural, historical and cognitive justice. In contrast, the Global
South, in its immense diversity, presents itself today as a wide
field of economic, social, cultural, and political innovation.
ALICE is grounded on a wager, i.e that social, political and
institutional change may largely benefit from the innovations
occurring in countries and regions of the Global South. A
demanding wager, to be sure, for it presupposes availability
for mutual recognition, intercultural understanding, political
and ideological convergence, respect for identity, and celebration
of diversity.
The project began in July 2011 and will continue for five years. It
will operate under the auspices of the Centre for Social Studies
(CES) – an Associate Laboratory of the University of Coimbra,
Portugal.
Sobre ALICE
ALICE – Espelhos Estranhos, Lições Imprevistas: Definindo para
a Europa um novo modo de partilhar as experiência do Mundo.
ALICE é um projeto de investigação dirigido por Boaventura de
Sousa Santos e financiado pelo Conselho Europeu para a Investigação,
uma das mais prestigiadas e competitivas instituições
de financiamento internacional para a investigação científica de
excelência em espaço europeu.
O projeto ALICE visa repensar e renovar o conhecimento científicosocial
à luz das Epistemologias do Sul, propostas por Boaventura
de Sousa Santos, com o objetivo de desenvolver novos paradigmas
teóricos e políticos de transformação social.
Assombra a Europa e o Norte Global, em geral, um sentimento
de exaustão intelectual e política que traduz numa incapacidade
de enfrentar, de modo inovador, os desafios da justiça social,
ambiental, intergeracional, cultural e histórica que interpelam
o mundo nas primeiras décadas do século XXI. Em contraste, o
Sul global, na sua imensa diversidade, assume-se hoje como um
vasto campo de inovação económica, social, cultural e política.
ALICE assenta na aposta de que a transformação social, política
e institucional pode beneficiar amplamente das inovações que
têm lugar em países e regiões do Sul Global. Trata-se, no entanto,
de uma aposta exigente que pressupõe a disponibilidade para o
conhecimento recíproco, a compreensão intercultural, a busca de
convergências políticas e ideológicas, respeitando a identidade
e celebrando a diversidade.
A execução deste projeto teve início em Julho de 2011 e tem
uma duração de cinco anos, contando com o enquadramento
institucional do Centro de Estudos Sociais (CES) – Laboratório
Associado da Universidade de Coimbra, Portugal.
Cartas às/aos Europeias/eus
A proposta “Cartas a@s Europe@s” foi lançada por Boaventura de Sousa Santos no âmbito do projeto ALICE enquanto
parte do objetivo de repensar e renovar o conhecimento científico-social a partir de conhecimentos e experiências
do mundo que têm sido marginalizados e invisibilizados pelo pensamento hegemónico. A ideia começou a surgir
em julho de 2012 e, em setembro do mesmo ano, começamos a dirigir convites a movimentos e organizações
sociais que lutam na Europa contra a exclusão social causada pelo colonialismo, o capitalismo, o patriarcado e
outras formas de discriminação para escreverem uma carta aos europeus (a dirigentes políticos, partidos, chefes
religiosos, universidades, sindicatos, movimentos sociais, cidadãos e cidadãs em geral) e partilharem as mensagens
e as reflexões que elas suscitam.
Cinco séculos de colonialismo deixaram um legado de eurocentrismo muito forte e uma incapacidade imensa
da Europa para aprender com um mundo que repetidamente classificou como inferior. O fim do colonialismo
político não significou o fim dessa classificação. A pergunta-chave do convite foi “se a Europa pudesse aprender
com a experiência do mundo, que lições concretas lhe seriam mais úteis?”. Os movimentos que aceitaram o desafio
escolheram a quem se dirigir especificamente e decidiram os temas a tratar.
Estas cartas constituem o tema de duas oficinas da Universidade Popular de Movimentos Sociais. A primeira teve
lugar em Leiria, Portugal nos dias 23 e 24 de fevereiro e a segunda irá ser realizada em Madrid, Espanha a 15 e 16
de Junho. A UPMS parte da constatação de ignorâncias recíprocas e assenta nas ideias de “ecologia de saberes“ e
produção partilhada de conhecimentos. Subvertida a distinção educador /educando, a aprendizagem resulta de
debates horizontais entre ativistas, líderes de movimentos sociais, cientistas sociais, intelectuais e artistas. Nesse
sentido, algumas cartas aos europeus foram também solicitadas a académicos que participaram ou irão participar
nessas oficinas. Depois de cada uma das oficinas, os participantes são convidados a enviar-nos uma versão definitiva
da carta, que pode ou não ter sido alterada a partir das discussões levadas a cabo ou de novas reflexões.
No final, para além da memória da UPMS, como o relatório de sistematização ou um vídeo sobre as oficinas, pretendemos
organizar uma publicação coletiva com as várias cartas às/aos europeias/eus, tal como escritas pelas/os
suas/eus autoras/es, com vista a promover a divulgação de propostas e pensamentos alternativos.
The “Letters to the Europeans” proposal was launched by Boaventura de Sousa Santos within the ALICE project, as
part of its objective of rethinking and renewing scientific-social knowledge on the basis of forms of knowledge and
experiences of the world that have been marginalised and rendered invisible by hegemonic thinking. The idea began
to take shape in July 2012 and in September of the same year we began sending invitations to social movements and
organisations in Europe fighting against social exclusion caused by colonialism, capitalism, sexism and other forms
of discrimination, asking them to write a letter to Europeans (political leaders, parties, religious leaders, universities,
trade unions, social movements or citizens in general) and share the messages and reflections they inspired.
Five centuries of colonialism have left a very strong legacy of Eurocentrism and made Europe largely incapable of
learning from a world that it has repeatedly classified as inferior. The end of political colonialism has not meant the
end of this classification. The key question in the invitation was “If Europe could learn from the experiences of the
world, which specific lessons would be most useful for it?” The movements that accepted the challenge chose who
they wanted to write to and the themes they wanted to address.
These letters were the theme of two workshops given by the Popular University of Social Movements. The first was
held in Leiria, Portugal, on 23rd and 24th February and the second will take place in Madrid, Spain, on 15th and 16th
June. The UPMS starts from the premise of mutual ignorance and is based on the idea of the “ecology of knowledges“
and the shared production of knowledge. In breaking down the teacher/learner barrier, learning emerges from
horizontal debates between activists, leaders of social movements, social scientists, intellectuals and artists. Some
Letters to Europeans were therefore requested from academics who took part, or will part, in these workshops. After
each workshop, the participants are invited to send us a final version of the letters, which may or may not have been
changed on the basis of discussions that have taken place or new reflections.
Finally, in addition to the UPMS records, such as reports of the proceedings or videos of the workshops, we intend
to publish a compilation of the various Letters to Europeans, as written by the original authors, with the aim of
disseminating alterative proposals and ideas.
