The signs of the times make me pessimistic for the future. I observe with distress the rise of islamofobia
and racism in Europe. I see that the intellectual ghost of the past reappears in the modern discourse of “the
other”. I watch how people with whom I demonstrated for women’s rights and freedom are now joining the
voices that are so familiar from the time of colonialism and limit the rights of Muslim women to dress and
express their religious conviction.
I am glad to hear from ALICE that you are willing to look for answers outside of Europe. There is a rich body of
non-European thought and practice that deals with economy, society and morals but has been suppressed
for centuries.
Your banking crisis might have been avoided if you had tapped on the experience of Islamic banking that
prohibits speculation and fraud and institutes mechanisms in their financial system to prevent this.
In many European countries the people are not allowed to elect their head of states. Their selection is not
based on the content of one’s character and ideas, but on the nature of their genes. While many nations in
Africa, Asia and Latin America elect their head of state in democratic elections – and many of these elected
officials are women – some European nations don’t elect their head of state. The selection is determined by
the genes of the monarchs. Why start wars to bring democracy in Iraq, while democracy is still not achieved
in Europe? Just learn from the former colonies how to institute democracy.
In many former colonies a process is going on of decolonizing the mind. Non-European intel-
lectuals discuss how colonialism has permeated every aspect of our mind and how this is
translated in education, knowledge production, culture and media. Is it not time for European
intellectuals to do the same for Europe?
Be aware, that this is not an academic discussion. It is a painful exercise that may harbour unpleasant surprises.
Take for example the year 2013. The Dutch will celebrate 150 years of abolition of slavery. In 2007 the British
celebrated the bicentennial of the abolition of the slave trade. And other European countries might have
organized such celebrations in the past or will organize them in the future.

Os sinais dos tempos fazem-me encarar o futuro com pessimismo. Observo com inquietação o aumento
de islamofobia e de racismo na Europa. Vejo que o fantasma intelectual do passado reaparece no moderno
discurso sobre “o outro”. Vejo como pessoas com quem me manifestei pelos direitos e liberdades das mulheres
se estão agora a juntar a vozes tão familiares dos tempos do colonialismo e a limitar os direitos das mulheres

Apraz-me ouvir do ALICE que estão em busca de respostas de fora da Europa. Existe um corpo rico de
pensamentos e práticas não-europeias que lidam com a economia, a sociedade e a moral, mas que tem
vindo a ser suprimido ao longo de séculos.
A vossa crise bancária poderia ter sido evitada se tivessem bebido da experiência da banca islâmica, que
proíbe a especulação e a fraude e instituiu mecanismos no seu sistema financeiro para prevenir isto mesmo.
Em muitos países europeus as pessoas estão impedidas de eleger os seus chefes de estado. As suas escolhas
não se fundamentam no carácter e ideias de cada um, mas na natureza dos seus genes. Enquanto muitas
nações em África, na Ásia e na América Latina elegem o seu chefe de estado em eleições democráticas – e
muitos destes eleitos são mulheres –, algumas nações europeias não elegem o seu chefe de estado. A seleção
é determinada pelos genes dos monarcas. Para quê dar início a guerras para levar a democracia ao Iraque,
enquanto essa democracia ainda não foi alcançada na Europa? Aprendam das antigas colónias sobre como
instituir a democracia.
Em muitas antigas colónias está em curso um processo de descolonização da mente. Intelec-
tuais não-europeus discutem como o colonialismo se infiltrou em todos os aspetos da nossa
mente e como isto se traduziu na educação, na produção de conhecimento, na cultura e nos
media. Não será chegado o tempo de intelectuais europeus fazerem o mesmo pela Europa?
Estejam conscientes de que isto não é uma discussão académica. É um exercício doloroso que pode abrigar
surpresas desagradáveis.
Tomem por exemplo o ano 2013. Os holandeses irão celebrar 150 anos sobre a abolição da escravatura. Em
2007 os britânicos celebraram o bicentenário da abolição do comércio de escravos. E outros países europeus
