ABSTRACT The area studied is located between 0°30' and 4°00', latitude south and 40P30' and 48°00' longitude west of Greenwich. Basic semi-controlled radar mosaics and the field support required for the Map of Soils and Agricultural Suitability were used for the mapping in the scale of 1:1.000.000. The area comprises the northern portion of the Piaui—Maranhao Sedimentary Basin, and it presents a rather diversified geology, with rocks ranging from Holocene to Precambrian. Climate is hot and humid, belonging to the thermal climate of Gaussen's ombrothermic curves, comprising the xerochimenic and thermaxeric subclasses. A hydric balance of the region shows great variation in the water distribution, which ranges from an excess of 1,635.8 mm at Soure, State of Para, to a deficit of 997.3 mm at Quixeramobim, in the State of Ceara. The soil units found, which make up the associations of the Exploratory Soil Map, are the following: Yellow Latosol, Red-Yellow Latosol, Red-Yellow Podzolic, "Terra Roxa Estruturadà", Lateritic Concretionary, Non-Calcic Bown, Reddish Brunizem, Vertisol, Solonchak, Solodized—Solonetz, Solodic Planosol, Quartz Sands, Marine Quartz Sands, Eutrophic Regosol, Ground Water Latente, Ground Water Podzol, Low Humic Gley, Alluvial Soils, Mangrove Undifferentiated Soils, Hydromorphic Undifferentiated, and Litholic Soils. Agricultural and cattle raising activities of the region at present day level are poor developed. In evaluating the agricultural suitability of the soils in the area two management systems were used: a primitive system, or traditional cultivation, and an advanced system, of possible utilization within a short period of time. From the data obtained, it was possible to conclude that approximately 16,5% of the area is not adequate for agricultural use under natural conditions, and that surface and subsurface"hydrological'studies are particularly required for their integrated development.
