O tempo
da espera
O tempo é o protagonista do trabalho Espera, 2013, de
Gisela Motta e Leandro Lima.
O silêncio e a ausência
Waiting
time
Time is the protagonist of the work Espera
[Waiting], 2013, by Gisela Motta and Leandro
Lima. In it, given the absence of action, it is as
if time doesn’t move along. It’s about a time
extended to infinity: we don’t know where it
began or when it will end.
During the looped video, projected on a pair of
benches, the silhouettes of a woman and of a
man—who never meet—alternate. The benches,
which are reiterated in other locations in the
Porto Seguro Cultural Space, project shadows
that merge with those of the characters. Each
one waits for the other, but they are never in
the frame simultaneously. The silence and the
absence of images that would fully identify
the couple—after all we only have images of
someone we don’t see—make the scene of the
frustrated encounter even more mysterious.
This video can be understood by relating it
to the works of the artistic duo in which they
approach a couple’s affective relationship, but
it can also be seen in relation to the theater
of the absurd and the disruption of time’s
linearity.
In Waiting for Godot, 1952, by Samuel Beckett,
great expectation is created around the promised
arrival of a man we hardly know, called
Godot. Everything happens as though time
were paralyzed.
In Espera, while awaiting something that will
never come, we realize that our experience
with time is elastic, varying according to our
anxiety or desire for encounter, inasmuch as
there is no certainty about the future.
A time that is dilated is also dealt with in
Passei-o [Excursion/Passing by], 2005, in
which a train is awaited on a fixed plane until
a whistle announces its arrival. The spectator
tends to spend more time waiting for the train
than contemplating its passing, which is swift,
almost instantaneous. The train is transformed
into landscape; its image is camouflaged by the
surroundings, as if it were negated as it is replaced
by facades already seen. The landscape is
actually an ephemeral passage, more linked to
time than space.
The reflection regarding time reappears differently
in other works by the duo, as in Relâmpago
[Lightning], 2015, in which the instant of a
lightning flash generated by electrical discharge
is frozen. In an inner space, tubular lightbulbs
mimic and infinitely prolong the intense
light of a natural and ephemeral phenomenon.
Throughout the trajectory of Gisela Motta and
Leandro Lima, the natural and the artificial are
confounded. Instead of being treated as polar
opposites, they are aspects of the same reality.
The idea of nature is constructed historically
and, above all, is a cultural product. We don’t
know where the frontier between high tech
and low tech might be. In addition to revealing
the process involved in constructing many of
their works—analog mechanisms and visible wires—they
make use of projector errors, looking
for simple solutions and bordering on the antitechnological.
The Anti-horário [Counterclockwise] video, 2011,
deals with a cyclical time taking, as starting
point, a measure that measures nothing. While
the planet rotates counterclockwise, it is as if
the children walking on the terrestrial sphere
were marking the seconds and minutes. But
since time is immeasurable, pure quality, the
video deals more with the impossibility of measuring
our actual experience with a time that
never ceases to slip away than with determining
a quantity of minutes or hours.
The notion of time in the works of Gisela Motta
and Leandro Lima is not progressive, nor is it
linear, tending rather towards a circularity that
repeats itself in an eternal present. Perhaps
there is something of the Nietzschean notion
of eternal return, a frightening concept, which
questions the validity of our actions. Would we
like to relive eternally this life that keeps waiting
for something that will never happen?
