Writings and
SCRIPTURES in the
works of
Raquel Kogan
Organized by means of fictitious binders,
slides, unlike the artist’s first work, she still flirts
with the cataloging, archiving and the database
that will show up later in other works as
reflection and rereading, the latter presented
in the exhibition Arquivo Vivo [Live Arquive],
curated by me in 2013 at Paço das Artes.
Aqui, a proliferação
Since the mid-1990s, Raquel Kogan has been
delineating a unique trajectory within the context
of contemporary Brazilian art. Traversing
through different languages—paintings, engravings,
installations, multimedia projects
and digital art—Kogan’s works weave a very
particular relationship with writing and other
linguistic codes.
Kogan’s writing, however, cannot be reduced to
its graphic aspect. There are pictograms, calligrams,
numerals, letters of the alphabet, small
signs that often detach themselves from an a priori
semantic meaning, rearranging themselves in
small pictorial formations. They point to the drawing,
the scribble and to visuality, in a kind of illegible
calligraphy: an imagetic palimpsest.
At other times, her writings acquire the form
of a writing elaborated with readable codes,
allowing us to glimpse symbolic and cultural
issues. It is a writing that interweaves recollections,
memories and stories. Here, the proliferation
of graphisms—beyond their graphic
aspect and sensorial appeal, whether visual,
tactile or sonorous—makes room for personal
and collective narratives.
In one of her first installations, presented in
the Morumbi Chapel in 1999, Kogan places us
before a large “wall” formed by a fluid mass of
paraffin. In this paraffin, when completely solidified,
Kogan makes small incisions, scribblings,
drawing a text that is both calligraphic
and indecipherable.
A year later, the artist inscribes small language
codes on microscopic slides arranged
in spaces that visitors order and manipulate.
As with the microscopics, facing Kogan’s boxes,
we are invited to section off reality with
countless selective cuts, to try to decipher it
in a legible unit.
Once again, the artist presents us with writing
that needs to be deciphered, as if she
were performing small surgical cuts in the
writings that comprise the human species’s
writing-code.
In re-reading, Kogan appropriates passages of
books written by other authors. The interactive
installation is composed of a wooden shelf
with 50 books arranged as in a library. The
books are mean to be listened to, not read: favorite
short passages of books chosen by 50
people invited to participate in the project by
the artist. When someone opens a book, his
face is lit by a LED light, while a built-in audio
recording system with an integrated circuit
triggers the pre-recorded sound of the voice of
the person who selected the passage from a
favorite book.
Here, writing is transformed into a sound code
that integrates a large polyphonic library, the
collective memory of the literary production of
humanity. The written word is replaced by the
collective oral narrative, designing a different
meaning from the passages of the books chosen
to compose the installation.
In this sense, the idea of re-reading or, better,
of reading over again, as in other projects like
rever [resee] and vol.ver [re.turn], Kogan works
with the idea of repetition which, far from being
a mere mimetic reflection, where the other
is always the same, incorporates the idea of
difference. Different repetition or, rather, rewriting,
therefore comprises the notion that
the same is always other, that writing is always
open to the idea of difference, of other possible
voices and meanings.
vol.ver [re.turn], an installation shown in the
Present Time exhibition, has intrinsic relations
with writing and, in this sense, provides
continuity to Raquel Kogan’s previous
investigations. In the specific case of vol.ver,
one can say that they are testimony-writings
that embody and incorporate the memory
of those who are called to participate in the
exhibition.
In this work, Kogan offers us a large box filled
with a fine white powder: marble dust. To the
side, pairs of shoes with words written on the
sole are available for visitors to leave their footprints
on the installation’s surface. By walking
on the marble dust, each visitor imprints his
A instalação interativa é composta
A palavra
A repetição diferente,
