100 ENGLISH KONFEKSİYON TEKNİK | MAYIS | MAY | 2017 Russia and Turkey should sign a Free Trade Agreement While the developments in Russian market have been assessed, the road map of the export between two countries have been discussed in the panel titled as “Past, Present and Future of Leather Industry”, held under Allleather- IDF Istanbul, the largest leather fair of Turkey, organized with a motto of “High Rhythm in Leather” this year. President of UBM EMEA Istanbul, holding Alleather-IDF Istanbul Leather Fair, Serkan Tığlıoğlu notes that “the recent rapprochement with Russia in particular has opened the way for the industry and the industry has truly recovered with this dynamism. I observe that substantial number of Russian buyers have come to Turkey and the industry has revitalized again.” He also notes that UBM is an international company and organizes over 450 fairs all around the world and believes that Istanbul will be a center for fairs with its strategic location, place and production capacity and quality.
ENGLISH 101 KONFEKSİYON TEKNİK | MAYIS | MAY | 2017 “Russia should reduce customs duty to 5%” Expressing that there are many investment opportunities in Russia for Turkish businessmen, and there are many important opportunities in Turkey for Russian investors, Vice President of Istanbul Leather and Leather Products Exporters’ Association (İD- MİB), Mehmet Ali Dinçer indicates that “ For that reason, the relation between two countries should be crowned with a Free Trade Agreement”. Asserting that there should be a Free Trade Agreement between the two countries, where there are important figures on export and import, Dinç touches upon the high customs duty and states that “Russia takes 10 percent customs duty. We have an important request from them, we want them to reduce this 10 percent customs duty to five percent”. “2017 will be better than 2016 for Leather Industry” Expressing that Russia is one of the super power in the world, and Russian economy will move in a positive direction in consideration of the development, President of Istanbul Leather and Leather Products Exporters’ Association (İDMİB), Mustafa Şenocak indicates that “There is a recession in the world economy, it is in the Russia. We had 545-million-dollar leather and leather products exports to Russia in 2013, but now it has declined to 1.107 million dollars. However, in terms of leather sector, we believe that 2017 will be better than 2016.” He also noted that Turkey is aware that it needs to produce high-value products for export. Şenocak also notes that “Chip” application, which Russia has started for leather products, has increased the transportation fees from 30-40 dollars to 100-120 dollars and requests solution for this application. Expressing that Alleather-IDF Istanbul Fair has hosted 100 professional buyers from 18 countries, mainly Russia, President of Turkey Leather Foundation (TÜRDEV), Kıyasettin Temuçin notes that he aims to increase the export figures with the fair that have been in decline recently. Indicating that Turkish leather industry has been exporting to Russia for 25 years, Temuçin states that “We want to go back to old days with Russia, which is our largest buyer. As an industry, we will continue to export to Russia with our original design. However, our enterprises have been suffering from the “Chip” application, initiated by Russia. Our small and medium-sized enterprises are extremely affected by this situation”. “Russia should leave the leather business to Turkey” Member of Leather Promotion Board, Ruken Mızraklı has assessed the mutual needs of Turkey and Russia about natural gas and leather products. Indicating that business world has good mutual relations, Mızraklı states leather production has shifted to the east after 1920’s and 1930’s, underlines that Turkey is an important centre for tannery along with infrastructure and technical matters. Reminding that there is a 36 million cbm in Çorlu, and 30 million cbm in Tuzla and major industrial regions in a plenty of regions, Ruken Mızraklı states that “Russia should leave the leather business to Turkey and develop strategies on buying. Russia should assess leather industry separately within industrialization. Russians do not have to invest from the scratch on that issue for Turkey does it.” “Turkish - Russian trade relations are getting better” The Russian guest of the Panel, Vice president of Chamber of Industry and Commerce of Moscow Region, Vadim Vinokurov made important statements about the agenda and answered the questions of the audience and panellists. Referring primarily to the crisis, Vinokurov stresses that Moscow Region has a major industrial potential and every region in Russia is assessed differently and Moscow Region has closed 2016 with + 16 percent. Talking about the Russian economy Vinokurov notes that he does not expect a substantial change in the value of the Ruble at the moment. Expressing that Turkish-Russian relations are normalized at the moment after the plane crisis, Vadim Vinokurov states that “In fact, we did not stop our relations during the crisis. I think that humanitarian and commercial relations are above politics”.
