ABSTRACT<br />
Background: Cardiovascular morbidity appears to be increased in inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD).<br />
In patients with IBD, proinflammatory cytokine TNF-α can alter lipid profile causing dyslipidemia that<br />
promotes atherogenesis.The aim of this study was to identify long-term effect of anti-TNFα therapy on lipid<br />
profile and atherogenic index (AI) in patients with IBD.<br />
Methods: A total of 104 patients diagnosed as having IBD and treated with anti-TNF-α agents were evaluated<br />
by means of serum lipid profile. Atherogenic index was also calculated before biologic agent and then e<strong>ve</strong>ry<br />
six-month periods.<br />
Results: The median follow-up period was 27.9 months. There was a significant increase in median total<br />
cholesterol at months 24 and 36 compared to baseline (159.5 mg/dL vs 171 mg/dL and 174 mg/dL, p=0.01<br />
