on this area. The second is to increase awareness
about microbiota among the public and healthcare
professionals. Biocodex founded the Microbiota Institute
for this purpose. The Institute’s staff consists entirely
of Biocodex employees. The institute raise awareness
about microbiota by communicating individually with the
public, society and healthcare professionals using online
sources and printed materials. Our priority goal in Turkey
is to make the Turkish version of the website ready and I
can say that it will be ready soon. The latest addition to
the microbiota vision is the Microbiota Foundation. The
purpose of the foundation is to support independent
clinical studies on microbiota. Only 40% of the staff of
this foundation are Biocodex employees. The remaining
60% are independent scientists. The main purpose of
the foundation is to support clinical studies and research
on microbiota and its effect on health. In additional to a
global budget, 11 countries including Turkey contribute
local research funding. Being part of this project, Biocodex
Turkey gives Euro 25,000 worth of research grant every
year. The process for the third year will soon begin with
the announcement of our 2020 research grant.
How would you evaluate the general situation today
concerning probiotics and microbiota? What are your
anticipations?
I think there is confusion and lack of information about
probiotics and their effects. Everyone has an opinion
about probiotics. You support your immune system or
your digestive system with bacteria and yeast you ingest.
However microbiota is a world which immensely exceeds
this. Today there is a system which can have serious effect
on health starting from newborns to elderly people. I
think we can start to help people have a healthier life,
offer solutions to many problems which we cannot
pinpoint now or start to play a role in the treatment of
diseases by providing external support to the system.
What are your goals and dreams for the future as the
general director of Biocodex?
Bringing probiotics competency, knowledge and
experience to Turkey is one of my biggest goals.
Furthermore I would love to start production in Turkey.
With the increasing awareness about probiotics I believe
the use of probiotics will increase and a need to increase
production capacity will arise. Today Biocodex has
probiotics production only in France and Turkey could
present an option when the company starts to think
about increasing its production capacity. There is an
incentive system for local production under the national
health policy. Therefore in the long term, my goal is to
transfer all knowledge and experience about production
to Turkey to make Biocodex a bigger and better known
company.
Mikrobiyota vizyonun son halkası da Mikrobiyota Vakfı’nın
kuruluşudur. Vakfın amacı mikrobiyota alanındaki
bağımsız klinik çalışmaların desteklenmesidir. Bu vakfın
sadece yüzde 40’ı Biocodex çalışanlarından oluşuyor.
Kalan yüzde 60’ı ise bağımsız bilim adamları. Vakfın
temel amacı mikrobiyota ve sağlığa etkileri ile ilgili klinik
araştırma ve çalışmalara destek vermek. Global bir
bütçenin yanında, Türkiye’nin de arasında bulunduğu 11
ülkede lokal destekler verilmektedir. Türkiye Biocodex bu
projenin parçası olarak her yıl yirmibeş bin Avro değerinde
karşılıksız destek vermekte. 2020 araştırma desteğimizin
duyurusu ile 3. yılın süreci yakında başlayacak.
Gerek probiyotik gerekse mikrobiyota ile ilgili
günümüzdeki genel durumu nasıl değerlendirirsiniz?
Bu konudaki öngörüleriniz neler?
Günümüzde probiyotikler ile ilgili çok sağlıklı bir bilinç
seviyesinin olmadığını düşünüyorum. Probiyotiklerle
ilgili herkesin bir fikri var. Dışarıdan aldığınız bakteri ve
mayalarla bağışıklık sisteminize veya sindirim sisteminize
destek oluyorsunuz. Ama mikrobiyota dediğimizde,
bunun çok ötesinde bir dünyadan bahsediyoruz. Bugün
yenidoğandan yaşlılık dönemi dahil sağlığa ciddi anlamda
etki edebilecek bir sistem var. Biz de bu sisteme
dışarıdan destek olarak sağlıklı yaşamı sürdürmeye, şu
an söyleyemediğimiz çeşitli sorunlara çözüm önerisinde
bulunmaya veya hastalıkların tedavisinde rol oynamaya
başlayabileceğiz diye düşünüyorum.
Biocodex genel müdürü olarak geleceğe yönelik hedef
ve hayalleriniz neler?
Probiyotik yetkinliğini, bilgi birikimini ve tecrübesini
Türkiye’ye getirmek en büyük hedeflerimden biri.
İlaveten, Türkiye’de üretime başlanmasını çok isterim.
Probiyotik bilinçlenmesi ile birlikte kullanım oranları
artacak ve üretim kapasitesi zorlanmaya başlayacak
diye düşünüyorum. Günümüzde sadece Fransa’da
probiyotik üretimi yapan Biocodex için üretim kapasitesi
konuşulmaya başlandığında farklı alternatifler arasında
Türkiye bir seçenek olabilir. Ülke içi sağlık politikalarında
da lokal üretiminin teşviki söz konusu. Dolayısıyla uzun
vadede, üretim ile ilgili tüm bilgi ve birikimi Türkiye’ye
aktararak, Biocodex’i daha büyük ve bilinen bir firma
haline getirebilmiş olmayı hedefliyorum.
