Vojvodina Roma Center for Democracy
We had a very open and creative
meeting with Djordje Jovanovic,
the president of Vojvodina Roma
Center for Democracy (Vojvodjanski
Romski centar za Demokratiju). Vojvodina
Roma Center for Democracy
is an NGO, formed in May 2008, and is
active in Belgrade, Valjevo and Vojvodina
province, including the head-office
in Novi Sad.
Djordje Jovanovic and his organization
are working mainly on projects that
are targeting Roma children, pupils
and students. One of such projects is
»Empowering Roma students at the
University of Novi Sad«. The aim of
the project is to strengthen the ways
of support for Roma students to pass
more exams during the academic years
and successfully complete their
studies.
Today there are more then 200 Roma
students at the University of Novi Sad.
In 1994 there were only 4. So things
ARE getting better, but there is still a
lot more to be done.
Djordje told us also about the daycare
center for Roma children in Klisa
(Novi Sad suburb with large Roma
population). The daycare center has
become a real community center for
children in the area. Children are gathering
there to get help doing their school
homework, to find a quite room
to read and prepare school lessons, to
get light and electricity (some of them
doesn’t have the electricity at homes),
but also to play, to get warmed on
cold winter days, to get something to
eat, and to meet friends. He invited us
to visit the daycare center in Klisa.
It was great talking with Djordje. We
shared a lot of common ideas. We will
surely met again and stay in touch for
future projects! (Miško Stanišić)
