“ประเทศไทยมีแค่สองฤดู คือ ฤดูร้อนกับฤดูฝน” ถ้า
ได้ยินใครเอ่ยทำนองนี้ เดาได้เลยว่าเขาต้องเกิดและเติบโต
ในประเทศไทยอย่างแน่นอน ลองพิจารณาง่ายๆ จาก
โครงสร้างบ้านทรงไทย ซึ่งสั่งสมภูมิปัญญาในการสร้างที่อยู่
อาศัยให้เกิดความน่าอยู่ น่าสบายนั้น ก็ตั้งอยู่บนพื้นฐาน
หลักสองประการคือ การระบายน้ำและการถ่ายเทอากาศ
โบราณว่า “อยู่ใต้ฟ้า-อย่ากลัวฝน” ยิ่งอยู่ในประเทศเขต
ร้อนชื้นที่ฝนตกชุก ยิ่งมิต้องกังวลเรื่อง “ความเปียก” แต่
“ความชื้น” ต่างหากที่เป็นศัตรูตัวฉกาจของบ้าน ใครตากฝน
แล้วไม่เช็ดตัวให้แห้งก็เสี่ยงต่อการเจ็บป่วย บ้านก็เช่น
เดียวกัน ข้อสำคัญคือการระบายน้ำออกจากตัวบ้านให้
รวดเร็วที่สุด ต้องไม่หลงเหลือความชื้นสะสมในตัวบ้าน
ความชื้นจะทำให้ส่วนประกอบของไม้เกิดการโป่งพอง อีก
ทั้งยังเป็นแหล่งสะสมเชื้อรา หากถึงขั้นร้ายแรงอาจเป็น
อันตรายต่อโครงสร้างที่เป็นเหล็กได้

“There are only 2 seasons in Thailand; summer and
rainy season.” If you hear someone saying this, you can
guess he was born and raised in Thailand definitely.
Regarding traditional Thai houses, their convenient and
comfortable structures are accumulated from Thai intellect
based on 2 main concepts; draining and ventilation.
The older say, “Beneath the sky, don’t be afraid of
rain”. Especially in the tropical monsoon climate countries,
you shouldn’t be worried about the wet. The humidity
is a real enemy of the house. If you get wet because of
raining, you should dry yourselves as soon as possible
for not catching a cold. The house needs the same - to get
dried as fast as possible - that means the drainage is
required as soon as possible after the rain. Make sure
there’s no dampness left in the house. The humidity can
make wood components swell and also be source of
the fungi. In the worst case, it may cause damages to
the steel structure.
When talking about draining, we ought to understand
the water’s attribute first. Water is in liquid form
that runs from the higher to the lower. Then, to design
the coverage parts of the house such as roof, balcony,
canopy, including edging joints, we have to think of the
slope.
