Letter from the Editor
"Summer!" All the children scream and shout at not having
to go to school for a while. But there are still summer camps.
For the longest time in Jeonju, I worked many of those
summer English camps, but recently I've been reducing
my extra work during the summers to enjoy the hot and
humid weather. This weather, after all, doesn't last forever,
and getting outside more often provides the body with
essential vitamin D from the sun, and gives the mind
and spirit a chance to release stress. A quick morning
(or evening) walk (or bike ride) and sweat is good for
the whole human experience—and you can see just how
many people share that sentiment when you head out
along Jeonju's river pathways in the summer.
Personally, some of my favorite summer experiences include
greeting the sunrise, riding my bike for long distances and
in the rain, watching old men hang out and play chess (바둑)
under bridges or at Hanok Village, picnicking at the beach,
barbequing at the valley, and eating farm-fresh vegetables
and traditional Korean foods like ginseng/chicken stew
(삼계탕) on the three hottest days of summer. This year, the
three hottest days of summer fall on July 12 (초복), July 22
(퉁복), and August 11 (말복) and are a great opportunity
for expats to get together with their Korean friends for
a delicious, hot or spicy meal. Why eat hot food in the
summer? Koreans have an expression for this: "이열치열."
It means "beat the heat with heat" or "like cures like" and
when you experience it, I'm sure you'll agree, it's fun.
