The work of our last interviewee falls
closer within the scope of architecture.
The public might remember some of his
works from the art illustrations on the
walls of Wat Suthi Wararam by Bodhi
Theatre. Pong recounts how the project
began with the goal of attracting the
new generation to traditional spaces
like wats, through a form of art that
alters the general perception of the
site. The idea became popular and
not only attracted the new generation –
children and senior citizens were
also interested. According to Pong,
they decided to use the ‘Bahum’, or
Eight Victories and Blessings chant, as
their main storyline. This chant
tells the story of how the Buddha
overcame the eight challenges and
became victorious. Easily communicable
visually, the story is one that most
Buddhists know well. The art team
started with a blank slate, without
Each contemporary artist has their own unique
way of approaching and expressing spirituality,
whether it be through art or against art. By
separating the message and the mode of
representation, they have succeeded in retelling
tradition and belief through contemporary forms
of art. It is a hopeful story that gives Thailand a
template for new representations of our tradition,
belief and spirituality.
adhering to the traditional murals or
paintings present in most Buddhist
temples. While these murals were
shown at the beginning of the
animation, the visuals adopt a more
contemporary style throughout the
course of the story and end with a
representation of the main statute of
Buddha from the wat. The goal of the
art team was to take the essence of the
religious teachings and embark on a
new interpretation. By abandoning the
extra information, the animation
managed to show the core message of
the chant while giving new form to it.
