8. SUMMARY:<br />

8.1 Weather nearby - Taking the temperature of TV2’s weather report.<br />

The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the use of the criterion of nearness in the<br />

preparation of the weather report TV2Vejret, in its influence on the producer-recipient<br />

relationship, in the weighting of in<strong>for</strong>mation and entertainment shown in the program<br />

structure, content and expression, and finally in determining the program genre. In other<br />

words, this thesis, wants to examine how the criterion of nearness influences TV2Vejret and<br />

its weighting of in<strong>for</strong>mation and entertainment and thus the program genre.<br />

Additionally, I wish to account <strong>for</strong> the historical conventions and competitive elements that<br />

have had an influence on TV2Vejret, and to design a system of genre categories, in which<br />

journalistic TV programs, that use both the criterion of nearness and entertainment, can be<br />

genre categorized without being called entertainment programs.<br />

Because of cultural and political norms in preparation of TV programs, Danish TV will<br />

always be different from <strong>for</strong>eign TV channels. There<strong>for</strong>e, the use of media theory is in this<br />

matter concentrated on Danish history and media analyses.<br />

For want of literature on the Danish historical TV weather report, I have mainly based my<br />

historical exposition on one source, the <strong>for</strong>mer weatherman Steffen Hartbye and his<br />

description of the history of the TV weather report. I will, to back this up, also compare with<br />

general Danish TV-history, an area with much more literature and sources.<br />

The analysis of this thesis is based on TV historical accounts, TV analysis methods and<br />

genre theoretical considerations. The historical basis of this analysis is treated in the opening<br />

historical chapter. Here I clarify the development of the weather report presentation over the<br />

years, and I present some of the competive conditions and channel strategies that have had an<br />

influence on the weather report presentation.<br />

My theoretical account leads me to the conclusion that because of the competition with DR,<br />

TV2 created a channel strategy named “the convert OBS” system (meaning the opposite of<br />

OBS TV – and OBS means: in<strong>for</strong>mation to the citizen about the society.) The OBS strategy is<br />
