Fr 12-14 Water: Element, Right, and Commodity?
Marianne Henkel, Lena Partzsch, Rafael Ziegler, 2st,Seminarraum Soldmann-
straße 23
Water is an element of life, a global public good and a profitable commodity. Water governance is
therefore complex and urgently required. More than a billion people lack access to adequate
drinking water sources and sanitation, and the world’s rivers and critical freshwater ecosystems
are seriously threatened in many places. Further to that, current forecasts indicate that national
and international institutions will not be able to meet goals such as Millennium Development Goal
7. In this situation, the rapidly growing group of social entrepreneurs promises new problemsolving
capacity. The most famous social entrepreneur, Muhammad Yunus, along with the
Grameen Bank structurally changed access to capital via micro-credit schemes, and improved the
lives of many poor people. Likewise, there are social entrepreneurs in the water sector, i.e.
mission-driven change agents who use entrepreneurial means to advance social and ecological
ends.
This seminar offers an interdisciplinary introduction to global water governance with a specific
focus on social entrepreneurs. Lectures on the ecology of water, the politics of water, and the
ethical issue raised by water will be introduced by speakers from the respective fields with a view
to an interdisciplinary audience. The lectures will be complemented by case studies of selected
social entrepreneurs, and invited guests.
Course organisation and requirements: Participants are expected to attend all sessions, contribute
a (brief) presentation, and submit a final paper. The teaching language will be English; papers can
be submitted in either English or German. Readings are available via a reader from the Copy-
Shop Lichtblick (Am Markt 23/24) one week before the beginning of the Wintersemester.
