Genetic contributions of founders to the Piétrain herdbook populations are presented
in Figure 3. In all five herdbook populations, the largest proportion of genes of
animals born between 1980 and 1994 originated from founders of their own
population, whereas the gene contribution of foreign founders was comparatively low.
This changed when considering animals born between 1996 and 2008. Then, the
contributions of foreign founders markedly increased. All in all, founders from SH and
Bavaria had the highest gene contributions to other populations.
