Bier ist wohl eines der ältesten Getränke, das die zivilisierte
Menschheit aus der Frühgeschichte bis in die Moderne gebracht
hat. Waren es vor einigen Jahrhunderten eher praktische
Erwägungen, das Bier als Hauptgetränk zu bevorzugen, so ist es
heute vor allem die Vielfalt an Geschmack und neuen Variationen,
die das Bier weiter ganz oben in der Hitliste des Deutschen
liebster Getränke stehen lässt.
Beer is one of the oldest drinks around, and one that has accompanied
civilisation from early history through to modern times.
Centuries ago, beer became favoured as a drink primarily for
practical reasons. Nowadays though, the range of flavours and
new varieties available is the reason why beer still tops the league
of Germany’s favourite drinks.

Schon in der Antike, also weit in vorchristlicher Zeit, wurde neueren
Forschungen nach erstmals Bier gebraut. Die ersten Brauer
waren Sumerer, die wohl per Zufall den Gärungsprozess und
seine Wirkung für sich entdeckten. Damals soll das Bier noch als
Medizin gegolten haben.
Im Mittelalter war der Griff nach dem nun auch in Europa bekannten
Bier wohl eher dem Umstand geschuldet, dass kaum
sauberes Wasser in den besiedelten Gebieten zur Verfügung

brewers were the Sumerians, who discovered the process of fermentation
