Shrove Tuesday festival in Basel
The absolute classic in Weil am Rhein.
The museum has been showing classic
exhibits in Weil am Rhein since 1950, such
as the Eames Chair, in its near-to-original
form. The permanent exhibition is one of
the most extensive collections of modern
furniture design since the beginning of the
19th century.
Greater Basel Old
Town and Little Basel
The heart of Basel is located between the
SBB train station and banks of the Rhine.
The old town of Greater Basel is characterised
by its many alleyways, medieval
buildings, the Marktplatz (market square),
Basel cathedral and the town’s best street
for shopping, “Freie Straße”.
Visitors can get to Little Basel from Greater
Basel by crossing the “Mittlere Brücke”
bridge (or with one of the Rhine ferries).
This beautiful, multicultural part of town
offers interesting new boutiques as well as
alternative bars and clubs, and is home to
the Badischer Bahnhof Basel station.
3 Basel Art Museum
(Kunstmuseum Basel)
Switzerland’s biggest art museum – and
the largest collection of art in any city –
houses works from the Renaissance
through to the early 20th century. Basel
Art Museum is home to the most important
collection of Holbein works, as well as
masterpieces from artists such as Braque
and Picasso. The Museum Tinguely, Fondation
Beyeler and Museum of Contemporary
Art (Museum für Gegenwartskunst)
also house impressive collections of modern
art.
Tinguely Fountain
The Fasnachtsbrunnen (carnival fountain),
with its nine black figures that spout water
as they move, was created by artist Jean
Tinguely. These nine iron characters move
independently and converse jovially with
each other, like the mimics, actors and
dancers who once graced the stage at this
very spot. The popular artist has created a
new city emblem with this fountain. The
way art has been integrated into the lives
of Basel’s residents has been achieved
here with unprecedented success.
One of the most internationally renowned
events begins on the Monday following
Ash Wednesday, when the clock chimes
four in the morning, and goes on for a
whole 72 hours. In 2012, the festival will
take place from 27th–29th February. The
bands first parade through the streets with
lanterns. As the street lights are turned
off, it creates a wonderfully unique atmosphere.
6 Basel Tattoo
“Tattoo” comes from the Dutch saying
“doe den tap toe” (“shut the tap”), which
was used in the 17th century to order the
beer taps to be shut off, upon the commandant’s
orders. This signal was mainly
given by a drummer or piper. This Dutch
phrase then gave rise to the English word,
“tattoo” (“Zapfenstreich” in German),
which, over the years, has become synonymous
with music festivals of this kind.
The Basel Tattoo is a unique event with
bands from 17 different countries. Following
Edinburgh, this is the second largest
event of its kind in the world.
7 Rhybadhysli Breite
Open Air Pool
The Rhybadhysli open-air pool is one of
the last two remaining swimming baths on
the banks of the Rhine. For many people,
a trip to the Rhine baths and a dip in the
river is synonymous with a good quality
of life.
As swimmers step inside a pool on the
Rhine, they leave everyday stress behind
them and enter another world. The Rhine
open air pool is a great place to relax, either
swimming or sunbathing, as well
as being a great place to meet up with
friends.
A catering service is provided for swimmers
at Restaurant Veronica. In winter, a
public sauna is open at the Rheinbad pool.
Sightseeing by boat
Those who enjoy water can also discover
the region by boat. Comfortable Rhine
boats offer tours of varying duration. The
trip from Basel to Rheinfelden takes several
hours. It is also possible to stop off
along the way to explore places ashore.
and holds up to 60,000 spectators.
