Das MMK gehört zu den international
renommiertesten Museen für zeitgenössische
Kunst. Die Stadt Frankfurt am Main
zeigte Weitblick und Kunstsinn, als sie
mit dem Erwerb der vormals Darmstädter
Sammlung Karl Ströher Anfang der 1980er
Jahre die Grundlage für ein eigenes Museum
für moderne Kunst schuf.
Den Nukleus des Hauses bilden
Meisterwerke international bedeutender
Künstler wie Roy Lichtenstein, Andy
Warhol, Dan Flavin, Joseph Beuys oder
Palermo aus den 1960er Jahren – Werke,
die der amerikanischen Pop-Art und dem
internationalen Minimalismus zugeordnet
werden. 2006 brachten Teile der Kölner
Sammlung Ricke bedeutende Beispiele
der New Yorker Konzeptkunst und des
Post-Minimalismus ein.
Ein Rundgang durch das Haus gerät zu
einer beeindruckenden und spannungsreichen
Werkschau aus den Jahrzehnten von
1950 bis heute. Alle Namen, die in diesen
Epochen in der deutschen und internationalen
zeitgenössischen Kunst eine Rolle
spielten, scheinen hier vertreten zu sein.
Mehr als 4500 Exponate und 440 Künstler
repräsentieren das internationale und
nationale Kunstschaffen aus Malerei,
Bildhauerei, Fotografie und Videokunst,
ergänzt von Projekten aus der Sound-,
Licht- und Performancekunst.
Das MMK hat den Anspruch, bei keiner
Periode stehen zu bleiben und bis in
unsere Tage das jeweils aktuellste Kunstgeschehen
aufzugreifen. Das schafft eine
besondere Aura der Authentizität. In der
Kunst des noch jungen Jahrtausends –
Hope, Teller, Tillmanns, Bayrle, Brandenburg,
Boyce, Burns, Floyer u.a. – spiegeln
sich politische, wirtschaftliche und gesellschaftliche
Gegenwarten.
Kluge Museumspolitik macht immer
wieder Neuerwerbungen möglich. Bei
den jüngsten Zuwächsen stehen Werke
von Walter de Maria (1969), Morris Louis
(1960), Bernhard Johannes Blume (1960
bis 1965) oder Martin Kippenberger (1985)
neben denen von Dan Flavin (1990), Walter
van Beirendonck (1995), Jürgen Teller
(1997), Isa Genzken (2007), Cyprien Gaillard
(2009) und Zinny Maidagan (2009).
Faszinierender kann Gegenwarts-
Kunstgeschichte kaum sein. •

The MMK is one of the world’s most
important museums of contemporary art.
The city of Frankfurt am Main showed
great vision great vision and an astute
sense for art when it purchased the Karl
Ströher collection that had previously
resided in Darmstadt, thus laying the
foundation for its own museum of contemporary
art in the early 1980s.
The core of the museum contains masterpieces
from the 1960s by internationally
renowned artists like Roy Lichtenstein,
Andy Warhol, Dan Flavin, Joseph Beuys
or Palermo that are attributed to American
pop art and international minimalism.
In 2006, parts of the Ricke collection from
Cologne were added to the museum – important
examples of New York’s conceptual
art scene and postminimalism.
A tour of the building offers an impressive
and exciting retrospective of the
history of the museum from the 1950s to
today. Every name that has played a part in
the German and international contemporary
art of these decades seems to be represented.
Domestic and international art
from the fields of painting, sculpture, photography
and video art are represented by
more than 4,500 exhibits and 440 artists,
and are complemented by projects from
the fields of sound, light and performance
art.
It is the aim of the MMK not to stop its
collection at a certain period but to always
to follow artistic trends into the present
day, creating a special atmosphere of authenticity.
The art of the young, new millennium
– Hope, Teller, Tillmanns, Bayrle,
Brandenburg, Boyce, Burns and Floyer, for
example – mirrors the political, economic
and social aspects of our present.
Time and again, new acquisitions are
made possible by prudent museum politics.
Among some of the most recent
purchases are works by Walter de Maria

Kippenberger (1985), Dan Flavin (1990),
